In 2018, it was exactly 50 years since University College Birmingham was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh as the Birmingham College of Food and Domestic Arts, bringing courses spread over nine schools across the city under one roof at the brand new Summer Row campus.
Today, hospitality managers, aviation executives, dazzling hairdressers and makeup artists, educators, chefs, bakers, tourism industry experts, business leaders and creative entrepreneurs learn skills for life at a university hailed for its vocational training, academic achievements and cultural diversity. We have invested £140 million in our campuses and facilities, including building McIntyre House and Moss House, since 2014. These ambitious projects represent a bold statement of intent beyond the dreams of Birmingham’s early educational pioneers.

The University owns and manages accommodation for more than 800 students at our purpose-built halls of residence in central Birmingham.The MaltingsThe Maltings student accommodation is owned and managed by University College Birmingham and is situated in the heart of the city on Granville Street, between Broad Street and Bath Row. The name was inspired by the brewery formerly based at the site.The Maltings is popular with students attending the University for the first time. It is conveniently located only 10 to 15 minutes’ walk from the main campus and comprises 827 study bedrooms, including 809 en-suite rooms, of which five are twins.

I�ve absolutely loved my time at the University of Birmingham and would highly recommend it to prospective students. One of the biggest highlights for me has been the quality of teaching. My lecturers are experts in their fields and are genuinely passionate about their subjects. In my Business Management with Marketing course, classes are engaging and practical where we don�t just learn theory, we apply it through real-world case studies. The campus itself is another standout feature. It�s beautiful. The main library facilities are excellent, especially during exam season when having reliable study spaces makes a huge difference. Student life is vibrant and diverse. There are so many societies and events that it�s easy to meet people and get involved. Birmingham as a city is also a big plus. If I had to mention a downside, some modules can feel quite content-heavy at times, so good time management is essential. However, this is manageable and part of the challenge of studying at a respected university. Overall, my experience has been incredibly positive. I�ve grown academically, professionally, and personally during my time here. I would definitely recommend the University of Birmingham to students looking for strong academics, an active campus life, and a supportive learning environment.
I am currently in my second year studying Digital Marketing at University College Birmingham, and my experience has been extremely positive. The course offers a great mix of theory and practical learning, helping me develop real industry skills in SEO, social media marketing, content creation, analytics, and campaign planning. The learning environment is friendly and professional, and the course has greatly improved my confidence and career readiness. As a B.A. International Relations student at the University of Birmingham (UoB), I can confidently say that choosing to enrol here was a great decision and one I do not regret. UoB does not just concern itself with students� academic lives, but also places real importance on social life and overall student experience. There are many services available that support future job opportunities; including CV writing support and work experience schemes, which I have personally found very useful. UoB also has a wide range of societies, and the university strongly encourages students to get involved through society fairs and regular emails, making sure everyone can find a space where they feel welcome. My own experience of joining the Pole Fitness Society at UoB has been incredibly rewarding. Through this society, I have met my closest friends, and it has given me a real sense of belonging at university. We are now one of the best universities in the country for competitive pole dancing, and the society is such a supportive and empowering community. I think it is notable how much UoB pushes students to join societies, because it genuinely makes a difference to the university experience. However, whilst the university supports students in many ways that feel unique compared to other institutions, at the end of the day we are here to earn a degree. I have found the academic side of UoB to be lacking in comparison to other top universities. Although lecturers and seminar leaders are generous with their office hours and offer personalised academic support multiple times a week, the overall teaching quality can sometimes feel unclear. I often leave lectures feeling confused and seminars feeling as though I have not learned anything new. More needs to be done in clearly explaining assignment expectations. At times, I have felt that I have not reached my full academic potential due to miscommunication about what was required. I have experienced situations where lecturers and seminar leaders appeared to contradict one another, which created confusion. This suggests a lack of communication between staff, and it can sometimes feel as though teaching is not always the primary priority. At over �9,000 a year, students should feel confident that teaching is cohesive, clear, and worth the investment. Overall, UoB provides an excellent social environment, strong career support, and an incredible sense of community through its societies. However, improvements in teaching clarity and staff communication would greatly enhance the academic experience.
