Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is an international joint venture university founded by Xi’an Jiaotong University in China and the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. As an independent Sino-foreign cooperative university, it captures the essence of both prestigious parent universities and is the first and only one of its kind approved by the Ministry of Education in China.

History

  • 2004: Agreement signed between Xi'an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool to set up XJTLU.
  • 2005: Ministry of Education authorises the construction of XJTLU
  • 2006: XJTLU officially established. XJTLU welcomes first intake of 164 students.
  • 2007: More than 570 undergraduate students join XJTLU’s second cohort.
  • 2008: 730 students enrol in the third cohort at XJTLU

Education

The University will continue to enhance its undergraduate education excellence especially by taking hybrid of online and on campus education as the new context, through rigorous teaching quality assurance, new frameworks for undergraduate teaching, enhanced curriculum and a wider base of education options for students. 

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University offers a range of scholarships for undergraduate, masters, and PhD students. Research

XJTLU aims to bring together the best practice from its parent universities, Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool, and aspires to be a leading research-led university that combines a strong international profile with an unswerving commitment to the economic and social development of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province and China.

Our location in Suzhou Industrial Park, which houses more than 5,000 international enterprises and Fortune 500 companies, means XJTLU students have numerous job opportunities after they graduate. Our graduates work at institutions and enterprises including the ‘Big Four’ accounting and consulting firms, foreign-owned banks, financial institutions, foreign-owned manufacturing and developing firms, and large and medium-sized state-owned enterprises. 

Student services

The Student Affairs office plays a vital role in creating and maintaining a dynamic and harmonious campus environment through a series of student services and support.

Main Responsibilities
  • The One Stop Student Service Centre: provides a one-stop service centre for all enquiries current XJTLU students may have.
  • Mental Health Counselling and Development: provides support to students experiencing mental health difficulties.
  • Student Organisations and Activities Supporting Team: made up of The Student Union and the Association of Student Societies. The Student Union aims to enrich campus culture, defend students’ rights and provide an important platform between the University and students.

Housing services

  • The accommodation facilities our students stay in are managed privately by the Suzhou Industrial Park Education Development and Investment Limited Company.
  • You will receive assistance in booking your accommodation once our Finance Office confirms your payment of the deposit or full tuition fee (i.e. non-degree Chinese language programme) to secure your place at XJTLU. Where possible, we will try to allocate you to your first choice, however, due to the limits of supply and demand, we may not be able to satisfy your first choice.

Library services

The University Library is a blended library, offering digital and print resources, with virtual, mobile and face-to-face services, to support multiple approaches to research, learning and teaching.

 With over 90% of the printed collection being academic books in English, the collection is well-balanced among science, engineering, business, management, humanities and social sciences, and arts.

ICT services

Our computer services use the latest technologies and are updated regularly. Students have access to all of the major IT packages as well as subject-specific software such as Adobe CS6.0 for built environment students, Sage 50 Accounts Professional for accounting students, Altera (Quartus II) computer-aided design software for electrical and electronic engineering students

Campus life

Full of striking, architecturally impressive buildings, our North Campus provides state-of-the art teaching, laboratory, research and support facilities. This includes the award-winning and iconic Central Building, which houses our library.

The campus also has sports facilities, world class-fully equipped science and engineering laboratories, and design studios, as well as a variety of catering facilities, and many canteen-style fast-food options.

Landscaped gardens complement pieces of modern art to create a campus environment that has become one of the striking features of Suzhou Industrial Park.

Sports facilities

As an XJTLU student, as well as participating in our student sports clubs, you will have the chance to take part in physical education classes, coordinated by our Physical Education Centre.

Currently, 21 sports are offered through PE classes at XJTLU, including badminton, basketball, belly dancing, billiards, boxing, bridge, Chinese martial arts, football, free combat, body building, golf, popping, roller-skating, sport dancing, table tennis, taekwondo, tai chi, tai chi sword, tennis, Ultimate Frisbee and yoga.

Student clubs

We host a Model United Nations, while the Student Union plays an active role in shaping campus life and academic experiences. We also have an arts centre that gives students the opportunity to get involved in a range of creative activities.

Our campus even has its very own student enterprise park where you can try developing a new product of starting your own business.

Our business school is the youngest ever to earn Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International accreditation, and XJTLU is the first university in China to gain unconditional Part 1 and Part 2 accreditation from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for our undergraduate and postgraduate architecture degrees respectively.

We have also attained accreditation from the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the Royal Society of Biology (RSB), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
