History
King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) was officially established by Royal Decree on 5 Jumada 1, 1383 (23 September, 1963). The first students were admitted a year later, on 23 September, 1964, when 67 young men enrolled in what was then named the College of Petroleum and Minerals (CPM). Since that time, the University enrollment has grown to over 10,000 by the 2020 academic year.
Education
KFUPM, same as other Saudi Universities, has a board chaired by the Minister of Higher Education while the rector serves as the deputy chairman. Membership of the Board includes the Secretary General of the Council of Higher Education, the vice rectors, the deans, and three external members appointed by the Minister of Higher Education. This Board is responsible for all university operations, it grants degrees to students, approves programs and curricula of existing departments, and makes recommendations to the Council of Higher Education in other matters.
Research
The Deanship of Research at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) was originally established as part of the Deanship of Graduate Studies in the year 2000, and then became an independent Deanship in September, 2005.
The Deanship is responsible for the planning, management, promotion and support of research activities that are carried out by Faculty and Researchers at KFUPM through internal and external funding. The deanship is managed by the Dean of Research and has one assistant Dean. The deanship has three main offices that extend services to all KFUPM research community: Office of Sponsored Research (OSR), Office of Collaborative Research (OCR) and Office of Research Support (ORS).

Library services
The KFUPM Libraries ranks among the top Saudi Arabian academic research libraries by any measure. The Libraries's collections and services, physical and virtual, provide outstanding support for internationally recognized research in more than 10 doctoral programs while also addressing the learning needs of more than 10,000 undergraduate students across the campuses.

Mission: to provide excellent IT services that foster productive education, research, community service, and administrative activities at KFUPM through competent staff, effective processes, and state of the art systems.
Campus life
The Dammam Area has an ample amount of shopping centers range from the smaller, downtown, ethnic shops to the ultra-modern Malls, with its many Western brands.
In 1976, KFUPM adopted the Geophysics option. In June 2015, both Geology and Geophysics programs were fully accredited by National Commission for Academics Accreditation and Assessment (NCAAA), on the same year both programs underwent a major revision, focused on integration and international outreach of students.
