History

East Carolina University is a public, doctoral/research university in Greenville, North Carolina, United States. Named East Carolina University by statute and commonly known as ECU or East Carolina, the university is the third-largest in North Carolina. Founded on March 8, 1907 as a teacher training school, East Carolina has grown from 43 acres (17 ha) to almost 1,600 acres (647 ha) today.

Living on campus means living in the heart of the Pirate Nation. While on campus students can join more than 250 organizations including academic clubs, honorary, social and professional groups. There are also Greek Fraternities and sororities as well as special interest groups that can help you connect to ECU in special ways.

Library services

Joyner Library welcomes you with collections, services and study spaces that support the research, teaching and service goals of ECU. This main campus library has the resources you need for your coursework within the colleges of Academic Affairs.

From modest beginnings as a teacher training school, East Carolina University (ECU) has grown to become an emerging, national research university with an enrollment of more than 28,000 students. The campus is located in Greenville, North Carolina, less than a two-hour drive to both the state capital, Raleigh, to the west and Atlantic Coast beaches to the east.
