March 30, 1910: Mississippi Normal College is founded by a legislative act as the state’s first state-supported teachers training school. The school’s five original buildings are built on 120 acres of cutover timber land donated by H.A. Camp, A.A. Montague and Dr. T.E. Ross.

Office of Research Administration contributes to the university’s responsibilities for education, research and service by assisting members of the campus community as they seek external support for their research, creative and other scholarly activities. ORA is also responsible for post award administration of contracts and grants awarded to the university.The USM Center for Undergraduate Research was established in October 2011. The overall mission of the center is to enhance the undergraduate experience by promoting and supporting student-faculty collaborations in research, creative projects and scholarship.


Career Services provides career counseling, resume writing and job-seeking services for Southern Miss students and alumni.We give you one-on-one, personalized counseling on everything from choosing a major to networking within your chosen field. Career Services sponsors several employment opportunities available to students such as the annual Career Fair, where students meet with company representatives and potential employers, and Jobs for Eagles powered by Handshake, which connects you directly to the job opportunities currently available on and off campus.


Housing services

The Department of Residence Life at Southern Miss offers a safe place for students to live, while making the most of their social and academic lives. With 24 residence halls housing more than 3,000 students, living on campus is convenient and is a great way to get involved!

Library services

The Gulf Coast Library in Long Beach and Gunter Library in Ocean Springs serve The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast campus.Cook Library, located on the Hattiesburg campus, contains the principal collections of books, periodicals, microforms, government documents, and other materials which directly support the research and instructional programs at all levels.
