History

Missouri State University was founded in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School. During its early years, the institution’s primary purpose was preparing teachers for the public school systems in the southwest region of Missouri. Here are some important dates in the history of the University:

Education

Missouri State University will be the university of choice to develop successful students who excel academically and in ethical leadership, cultural competence and community engagement. We value a student-centered learning environment and excellent teaching that promote and support academic success and personal development.

Research

Research is an essential contribution by Missouri State that contributes to the public good, encourages faculty development and enhances the educational process.

Housing services

Students with disabilities who experience or anticipate barriers to their participation are encouraged to request accommodations by going through the following process. Students should request accommodations as soon as a barrier to participation is anticipated as accommodations cannot be provided retroactively. Distance learning students should follow this same accommodation process.

Library services

The Missouri State University Libraries, a singular entity, provides information resources, services, and spaces to advance the University’s purpose to develop educated persons. Infused by MSU’s statewide mission in public affairs and our commitment to inclusive excellence, we provide fundamental support for teaching, learning, research, scholarship, creative activities, and service.

Medical services

Magers Health and Wellness Center is a medical home for the MSU community conveniently located on the Missouri State University campus next to the University bookstore.

Patients are seen in the Magers Health and Wellness Center by appointment. A limited number of openings are available for sudden illness or injury.

We offer a wide variety of medical services in our treatment facility.

Campus life

MSU perceives students with disabilities as a valued identity group and integral to our campus diversity. We strive to proactively create usable, equitable, inclusive learning environments. However, due to the design of a University course or program, students with disabilities may experience barriers to their full and meaningful participation. When this occurs students should request an environmental or course adaptation through the process outlined below. It is the policy of Missouri State University to comply with all applicable federal and state laws prohibiting disability discrimination.

Sports facilities

The cornerstone facility for Campus Recreation is the Foster Recreation Center. Located in the heart of campus, this state-of-the-art facility includes an aquatics center, basketball courts, climbing wall and boulder, fitness center, indoor jogging track, multi-purpose activity court, and more!

These recreation fields are equipped with three sand volleyball courts and two multipurpose turf fields. Located on the corner of Harrison and National Avenue, the Bobby and Betty Allison Recreation Fields are available to Missouri State students and faculty/staff.

Student clubs

Missouri State has over 350 student organizations. Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet new people, share culture, and network.

Missouri State University’s regional accreditation is through the Higher Learning Commission. On a 10-year review cycle, Missouri State has been continuously accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1915. HLC accreditation is for the entire university not specific academic programs.
