History
John Tarleton College opened its doors on September 3, 1899 with W. H. Bruce as president. In 1917, the college became part of The Texas A&M University System and the name was changed to John Tarleton Agricultural College.

Tarleton State University is committed to encouraging research, scholarship and creative activity. The Office of Research & Innovation provides support, coordination and oversight for grant proposal development and submission, manuscript assistance, the University Research Committee, and official approval entities like the Institutional Review Board, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Institutional Biosafety Committee.

Medical services
The Mission of the Student Health Center is to maintain or restore the health of the students of TSU to maximum capability to enable them to achieve their academic goals. It is the intent of the Student Health Center to deliver quality medical care in a cost effective manner in treating acute illnesses or injuries, evaluating and treating acute exacerbation of chronic illnesses, etc.
Campus life
The Tarleton campus sits in the center of Stephenville and enriches the lives of students with a traditional college experience, offering more than 18 on campus living options, a gym, study areas and variety of student organizations that meet on campus. Students at the Stephenville campus have the opportunity for field learning and internship experience with many of the local businesses. Stephenville allows students to earn a high quality education, while staying in an area that feels just like home and with a lot of history.
