The University of Alaska Anchorage traces its origins back to 1954, when Anchorage Community College (ACC) was founded. That year, ACC began offering evening classes to 414 students at Elmendorf Air Force Base. In 1962, ACC, along with other community colleges around the state, was incorporated into the University of Alaska statewide system.
The mission of the University of Alaska Anchorage is to discover and disseminate knowledge through teaching, research, engagement and creative expression. Located in Anchorage and on community campuses in Southcentral Alaska, UAA is committed to serving the higher education needs of the state, its communities and its diverse peoples. The Dean of Students Office is part of Student Affairs. We strive to remain "student focused" and build programs with each and every student as a priority. The Dean of Students Office provides critical incident response and resolution of complaints regarding student behavior through mediation and/or the Student Conduct process.

The Office of the CIO and IT Services is responsible for UAA's telecommunications, network infrastructure, and academic technology support services. We work closely with distributed IT staff located on UAA campuses as well as with our colleagues at UAS, UAF and our Statewide organization.
The Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) promotes optimal health for the University community through access to high quality and affordable health care, preventative health care, individual counseling, consulting, outreach and health education.

UAA Athletics serves the Anchorage and campus communities by fielding competitive NCAA teams in 13 sports and providing recreational opportunities for students, faculty and staff. UAA is a proud member of the Great Northwest Athletics Conference (GNAC), Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) and Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association, bringing student-athletes from all over the world to participate in basketball, cross country running, gymnastics, hockey, skiing, track & field, and volleyball.
