History
In 1960, a group of central Illinois citizens, united in their goal of bringing a four-year university to the capital city, formed the Springfield Committee for Higher Education. Legislation creating Sangamon State University (SSU) was signed in 1969. The first classes were held in 1970, which is considered the founding year of SSU.

The University is committed to providing the safest environment possible for work and study. Part of that commitment involves providing information about campus security to current as well as prospective students and employees.
Medical services
We provide health care that allows individuals to perform optimally, both physically and mentally, in order to achieve their academic and intellectual potential and to minimize interruptions in their academic careers. We provide health care and health education in a safe environment.

Sports facilities
Campus Recreation provides the best comprehensive recreational sports program by offering: quality activities, equipment, facilities and service for the betterment of body, mind, and spirit to enhance the recreational, educational, and social lives of the UIS community.
Student clubs
Involvement in campus organizations is an important part of your complete educational experience at UIS.
Student organizations offer social, service, and professional opportunities for their members within the university and community. Membership can broaden acquaintances, develop leadership ability, build decision-making and problem-solving skills, and complement classroom instruction.
Accreditation
UIS is pursuing accreditation through the Open Pathway, a ten-year cycle that focuses on assurance of quality and continuous improvement. UIS’ next Site Visit is planned for February 19-20, 2018.

It is going to be awesome
Great learning experience and support
I had a very positive experience with the university. The courses are well structured, practical, and relevant to current industry needs, especially in technology and cybersecurity. I really liked the flexibility of learning and the supportive instructors who are always ready to help students succeed. The learning environment encourages independent thinking and skill development. However, I believe more scholarship opportunities and financial support for international students would make the experience even better. Overall, it is a great place to study and grow academically.
