When the citizens of Normandy passed a bond allowing Normandy School District officials to purchase the Bellerive Country Club for $600,000 in 1957 for a community college site, the plan was locally criticized as a "speculative venture." Despite this criticism, a bond issue was passed to buy the128 acre tract of land that included a club house, golf course, swimming pool, volleyball and tennis courts, and lake.
