The State University of New York at Oswego was founded in 1861 as the Oswego Primary Teachers' Training School by Edward Austin Sheldon (above, center), who embraced and popularized some of the most innovative teaching methods of his day. In 1913, the campus moved from the city of Oswego to the current lakeside location following the construction and opening of what is now known as Sheldon Hall.
Oswego's faculty and students actively participate in research, creative work and other scholarly activities. The college stresses the importance of undergraduate research opportunities, enabling advanced research for undergraduates that other institutions only offer at the graduate level. We have outstanding facilities that help students gain hands-on experience.
Founded in the city of Oswego by Sheldon to train teachers to meet pressing educational needs, the college moved to its current location on the shore of Lake Ontario in 1913 after Sheldon Hall was constructed. The current campus is located on 690 acres (2.8 km2) along Lake Ontario. Development of the campus was planned by the architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, who designed the major buildings.

The staff is highly experienced in responding to the medical and health concerns of the college's diverse population of students.
The campus today consists of 46 buildings with classrooms, laboratories, residential and athletic facilities. Recent years have witnessed the launch of a $700 million campus-wide renovation and renewal program, with the new Campus Center acting as the social hub of campus.
Campus intramural sports, club sports, and open recreation programs provide students, faculty and staff with opportunities to participate in a wide variety of formal and informal, skilled and unskilled activities designed to promote health and wellness in a fun way. Services offered by Campus Recreation include facility reservations and general assistance to registered sport clubs.
All candidates (undergraduate and graduate) from every program in the School of Education are encouraged to get involved in the Education Club. Group members cooperatively plan activities that meet your needs, such as informational meetings about program requirements, mock interviews, preparation of interview portfolios and resumes, and social events.
