Sonoma State University

History

In 1960 legislation was signed establishing Sonoma State College. It first opened to 274 students in Fall 1961 in leased buildings in Rohnert Park. The move to its permanent site of 215 acres took place in 1966, upon completion of Stevenson and Darwin Halls for classrooms.

Education

Within SSU's 36 academic departments, degrees are offered in 46 majors and 49 minors at the bachelor's level and 15 at the master's level.  The university offers a joint master's degree in mathematics with San Francisco State University and a joint doctorate in educational administration with Sacramento State University and the University of California, Davis. There are nine credential programs and eight undergraduate and graduate certificate programs. SSU also offers the one of the only Wine Business programs in the country. 

Research

The Office of Student Research supports students at all levels in their research, scholarship, and creative endeavors by providing information, resources, and opportunities to conduct, prepare, and present scholarly research and creative projects. Through active engagement with faculty members, student researchers share in the excitement of discovery, learn the value of teamwork and collaboration, broaden their career and academic options, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their chosen field.

Career

The Sonoma State University Career Center works to support and empower students to be active participants in their career development process. Our Career Advisors provide comprehensive resources and advising that are holistically centered in each students needs. 

Housing services

Sonoma State is a residential campus, with 90 percent of the freshmen class and 37 percent of all undergraduate students choosing to live on campus. Nationally recognized in the Princeton Review for “Dorms Like Palaces,” SSU’s housing goes above and beyond the typical dorm experience by providing suite-style living within six residential villages, with a total of 3,100 units. All suites and apartments are fully furnished and carpeted with their own living rooms and bathrooms, and all apartments have their own kitchens and provide wireless connectivity to the University's computer network.

The University Library is a dynamic and innovative partner in the Sonoma State University community. Students are at the core of what we do, and we leverage technology and creativity to promote discovery of and access to collections, to help students learn to use information effectively, and to encourage lifelong learning. 

Medical services

The Student Health Center(SHC) provides high quality medical, public health & health education services designed to support the retention, academic achievement & success of SSU students, facilitate healthy lifestyle choices & help promote a safe, healthy campus environment.

Campus life

269 acres, located in Rohnert Park at the foot of the Sonoma Mountains. The campus is an hour’s drive north of San Francisco and centrally located between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the wine country to the north and east.

Sports facilities

Sonoma State University offers over 20 competitive sport clubs.  Sport clubs are student organized and operated and provide students with an opportunity to play a sport in a fun, yet competitive environment.  All skill levels are welcome! 

Student clubs

Categories of organizations range from academic/departmental, cultural, spiritual, political, special interest, performing arts, fraternity and sorority life, and competitive sport clubs. 

Sonoma State University is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. SSU is also a member of the prestigious Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, an association of public colleges and universities whose primary mission is ensuring that fine undergraduate liberal arts and sciences education is available to students in the public systems of higher education. SSU is the only California member of COPLAC.
