Founded in 1839 by Horace Mann, Westfield State was the first co-educational college in America to offer an education without barrier to race, creed, or economic status.
The Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity, under the leadership of Director, Dr. Lamis Jarvinen, promotes and provides strategic cross-disciplinary support for all students, faculty, and staff to engage in creative scholarship. The goal is to remove barriers and empower students by facilitating and fostering collaborative engagement, professional development, and funding to support student research and creative activity in and out of the classroom.

The Student Government Association (SGA) is the longest standing open forum on campus. SGA consists of a 75 member Legislature and eight member Executive Council. The Executive Council is selected annually through a campus election held in the spring. The Legislature is made up of elected representative students from each Class and Residence Hall, Commuters, Multicultural Representation, Community Relations/Fundraising Representative and Representatives at large.
