History

Under the direction of the College of Medicine, a two-year School of Nursing was organized in 1911. In 1913, the school graduated its first class and became a three-year diploma program. Future physicians and nurses trained primarily in the old Rolater Home and Hospital in Oklahoma City until 1919, when University Hospital was built.

Education

The mission of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, as a comprehensive academic health center, is to educate students at the professional, graduate, and undergraduate levels to become highly qualified health services practitioners, educators, and research scientists; to conduct research and creative activities for the advancement of knowledge through teaching and development of skills; and to provide continuing education, public service, and clinical care of exemplary quality.

Research

We are pleased to announce the completion of the OUHSC five-year Research Strategic Plan(RSP). This plan represents 2 years of tremendous effort, commitment, and collaboration involving input of greater than 150 stakeholders representing leadership, faculty, staff, and students from across OUHSC.  We want to express our deepest appreciation and thank everyone for all of their hard work that led to the development of this document.

The Robert M. Bird Health Sciences LibraryThe Robert M. Bird Health Sciences Library serves the Health Sciences Center and health professionals across the state, providing mediated searching, journal photocopying and access to the largest collection of medical books in Oklahoma.

Medical services

The OU Physicians Student Health & Wellness Clinic provides acute and chronic care for injuries and illnesses, as well as routine preventative care. The OU Physicians Student Health & Wellness Clinic staff will make every effort to schedule your appointment at a time that is convenient for you.

Campus life

  • ATM machines are located at the west entrance to the David L. Boren Student Union and the OU Physicians Building. 
  • The Bricktown Entertainment District, Oklahoma’s most unique entertainment destination and neighborhood, is the vibrant home to many restaurants, nightclubs, sporting facilities, shops, attractions, condos, and a spectacular canal. Located in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City, Bricktown, as it now stands, was once a warehouse neighborhood that has been magnificently restored.

Sports facilities

The University Health Club is a premier health and fitness facility. The facility occupies 80,000 square feet of space, incorporating the latest technological advancements in fitness and wellness. The University Health Club is open to OUHSC students, faculty, staff and the public. The mission of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center University Health Club is to provide the best possible experience for the students, faculty, staff, and community members to achieve their optimal health, improve physical and mental performance and enhance their lifestyles.

Student clubs

The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center boasts over 90 registered student organizations (RSOs).  RSOs cover a wide variety of interest including academic initiatives, special interest groups, recreational sports, religious groups, honor societies, hobbies, culture clubs and more.   

Accreditation

The College of Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), and as part of our periodic re-accreditation process we have prepared a self-study that examines in detail how we pursue our mission of protecting and improving the health of the people of Oklahoma, the United States, and other nations through: (1) education, public health workforce development, and cutting-edge research; (2) translating research and scholarship into public health practice and service; and (3) development and advocacy of evidence-based health management and policy.
