History

The University was established in 1965 in response to a need for public higher education in southwestern Indiana. From its earliest stage of planning in the early 1960s, community leaders have supported the University by providing a solid base for its present success and future growth.

Education

There are 70 undergraduate academic majors, 13 master's programs, and two doctoral programs. The newest degree programs include the doctorate in Educational Leadership and baccalaureate majors in engineering and health informatics. The University has made installation of advanced technology a priority for instruction and provides training for faculty to adapt technological advances to coursework.

Student services

Student Government Association at the University of Southern Indiana. SGA is here to serve the students of USI by promoting student ideas and representing student opinions.

Housing services

Housing facilities include the Joseph E. O'Daniel Apartments and the Frank F. McDonald Apartments.  In the heart of the apartment area is the Residence Life Community Center, which features a large common living room, expanded convenience store with pizza delivery, wireless internet, and a laundry room. In addition, there are apartment buildings designated for freshmen only.  Four suite-style residence halls, Newman Hall, Governors Hall, O'Bannon Hall, and Ruston Hall, offer incoming freshmen a more traditional campus living environment. Ruston and O'Bannon Halls house USI's nine living-learning communities exclusively for first-year students. 

Library services

The David L. Rice Library offers specialized resources and services to support the research and instructional needs of the students and faculty of the University. In addition to the many materials available within the library, some of the library's Online resources include: full-text article databases, e-books, Online news sources, research guides, and more. 

ICT services

Our support center includes phone, email, on-line and walk-in computer support for all students, faculty, and staff  at the University of Southern Indiana. 

Medical services

The USI Student Health Center, located in the lower level of the Health Professions Building, Room 0091, provides many services, including:

  • Administration of immunizations/injections
  • Flu and allergy shots
  • Pregnancy tests
  • Laboratory testing
  • Physicals
  • Prescriptions
  • Diagnosis and treatment of sexually-transmitted diseases

Campus life

Our beautiful campus, innovative faculty and outstanding facilities will help you get a feel for campus life. Our natural charm is evident during Open Houses — admission campus visit days — scheduled several times throughout the year.

Sports facilities

USI sponsors 17 varsity intercollegiate sports, claiming four national championships (men's basketball, 1995; baseball, 2010; baseball, 2014; softball, 2018), finishing three times as the national finalist (men's basketball, 1994 and 2004; and women's basketball 1997), and earning two third-place finishes (men's cross country, 1982; baseball, 2007). The men's and women's cross country/track teams have produced eight individual national championships since 1997.

The University is accredited for ten years at the baccalaureate and master's levels by The Higher Learning Commission. Programs in accounting, art, business, chemistry, education, engineering, health professions, and social work are accredited by the appropriate professional organizations and state agencies. Accreditation reviews by regional and discipline-based organizations continue to be prime indicators of quality.
