History

Prairie View A&M University, the first state supported College in Texas for African Americans, was established during the Reconstruction Period after the Civil War. This was an historical period in which political and economic special interest groups were able to aggressively use the Federal Government to establish public policy.

Student services

In keeping with Student Affairs mission, Student Counseling Services assist students in overcoming obstacles to their personal and academic goals that may impede their development. We accomplish this by offering individual, couples, academic skills, and group counseling for students and through outreach presentations, referrals, crisis intervention, training and consultation for the campus community. 

Housing services

Prairie View A&M students are able to serve in the Student Government Association, participate in intramural sports, volunteer in the local communityand participate in more than 90 student organizations related to their academic major or other interests. At PVAMU, we know that an education is balanced between what takes place inside and outside of the classroom

Library services

  • Holds over 370,000 Volumes, including over 700 print periodicals, and close to 4,000 media materials.
  • Provides access to 85 full-text databases across all academic disciplines.
  • Library databases provide access to over 42,000 electronic periodicals and over 30,000 electronic books.
  • Library awarded $60,000 HBCU-Mellon Foundation Photographic Preservation Grant to improve archival storage conditions 

ICT services

Information Technology Services supports all PVAMU faculty and staff desktop computers, peripherals (printers scanners etc.), University owned laptops, network infrastructure, Student Computer Centers and academic labs with the exception of Distance Learning and the College of Engineering. ITS does not support personal computers

Medical services

We provide professional and comprehensive medical care, health education and health promotion for a diverse population of students, faculty, staff and community.

Campus life

Prairie View A&M students are able to serve in the Student Government Association, participate in intramural sports, volunteer in the local community and participate in more than 90 student organizations related to their academic major or other interests.

Sports facilities

  • Blackshear Field serves as the on-campus home site for the Prairie View A&M Panther football team as well as the track & field teams.
  • The William "Billy" J. Nicks Building is the proud home of the Prairie View A&M University men's and women's basketball teams as well as the Lady Panther colleyball team.
  • The Prairie View A&M baseball field seats 517 spectators and is home to the Prairie View A&M baseball team.  The lighted field was renovated in the 1990s and has seen gradual changes over the years such as a new scoreboard, bleachers and dugout/bullpen additions. 
  • The Prairie View A&M Lady Panther softball field is home to the Prairie View A&M softball team.

Student clubs

Student Organizations provide an essential path for the growth and development of it members. The university greatly benefits from the energy and vitality these organizations give to campus life. Honors Societies, Clubs, & Interest Groups: Over 90 honorary, professional and social interest groups are currently active on campus, recruiting members regularly. These organizations provide opportunities for student leadership through service, participation and friendship. They also develop school pride and aim to enhance students’ academic standings. Prairie View A&M University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate degrees.
