CBU traces its roots to 1951 when the “St. Francis Xavier University Sydney Campus”, also referred to as “Xavier Junior College” (XJC), was opened in downtown Sydney as a satellite campus of St. Francis Xavier University. Growth during the 1950s saw several buildings opened on this site.

At Cape Breton University, we push the boundaries of innovation and thought leadership to create a global academic experience and build a sustainable future for our island.

Cape Breton University researchers are addressing important issues in scholarly discourses and debate, as well as problems that concern the general public. The research undertaken at CBU is making a difference—to academics, students, and to the community. The projects CBU researchers participate in are original, world-class and respected among other scholars and the public.

The Career Services team at CBU is here to work with you before, during and after your time as a Cape Breton University student. Our staff members consist of Student Development Officers and Student Placement Officers who will work with you on a number of subjects.

Student services

As a CBU student, we think your experience should be personally and educationally rewarding. That’s why the services we provide address more than your academic challenges—they also tackle the physical, emotional, spiritual and social challenges that can make a difference to the level of success you achieve.

Housing services

Living in residence is a big part of the university experience, and will provide the foundation for so many of the memories you make at CBU. In our residences, students from all over the world come together to discover what it really means to be a Cape Bretoner. From the moment you arrive in your residence, you’re going to feel like you’ve found your home away from home.

We believe that your residence experience should be as enriching and fun as possible. Our residence buildings are always buzzing with activity, and with tons of on-campus societies, there is always something to do!
