History
Miami Dade College opened its doors in 1960 amid the transition of desegregation and the influx of thousands of Cuban refugees. Initially, 1,428 students entered "Chicken Coop College," nicknamed for the original buildings that were transformed into classrooms.

Career
The Advisement & Career Services Department provides students with a quality, learning-centered experience that enables them to establish and fulfill their educational and career goals. By facilitating an effective decision making process regarding educational, transfer and career goals, advisors promote appropriate course selection and assist students with referrals to internal and external resources and support services. A staff of full-time Academic and Career Advisors representing diverse educational and professional backgrounds is available to provide this service.
Housing services
Miami Dade College does not provide student housing facilities for local or international students. However, each college campus will try to assist students to locate housing in the community. Students should arrive in Miami about four weeks prior to the beginning of the approved term of enrollment as indicated previously in order to arrange accommodations. International students must bring sufficient funds to pay at least three months of rent in advance at the time housing is located.
Library services
Each major center of Miami Dade College has its own library designed to meet the academic needs of its students, faculty and staff. Collectively, the eight libraries offer a wide variety of resources including books, e-books, audiovisual materials, magazines and journals.
Medical services
Miami Dade College's Medical Campus offers quality medical care through three clinics: Vision Care Clinic, Dental Hygiene Clinic, and the Health and Wellness Clinic. Medical Campus has also partnered with Miami Rescue Mission Clinic to provide additional services that includes primary care services and specialty services such as pediatric care.
Campus life
The Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College opened in 1970 holding classes in storefronts in downtown Miami. Since then, it has played an integral part in the effort to develop the skyline of downtown Miami. As the only comprehensive urban campus in the City of Miami, it provides a fully accredited, high-quality education to over 27,000 students each year.
Sports facilities
With a variety of cardio- and weight-training equipment, a state-of-the-art competition-size pool, and a dive training well, the North Campus Aquatic and Fitness Center is the perfect fit for your fitness needs. In addition, the Center is a uniquely equipped training facility for fire rescue, law enforcement and maritime agencies. Membership information and rental of pool lanes is managed by the Aquatic & Fitness center director.
