History
Originally located near Cooperstown, NY, Hartwick Seminary became a four-year college in 1927 and held its first classes in the city of Oneonta in 1928.
Education
Our purpose as a college of the liberal arts and sciences is to educate people who will thrive in and contribute to the world of the future; people who are prepared to meet the personal, intellectual, and social challenges of a rapidly changing and increasingly interdependent world.
Research
Many student and faculty research projects are conducted at the Pine Lake Environmental Campus including study of: conservation biology and ornithology, microbial communities, stream ecology and invasive species, acid rain deposition, amphibian ecology, impact of recreational use of public lands on biological and ecological diversity, and entomological taxonomy.
Career
Hartwick graduates will be noted as being able to thrive in a world of global interdependence in which people of the broadest range of national, ethnic, social, and personal backgrounds will interact personally and technologically.
Housing services
Hartwick College is a residential liberal arts college that provides housing for our full-time students.
From traditional corridor-style residence halls to suite-style rooms, townhouses and cabins at Pine Lake Environmental Campus, Hartwick College Housing offers many different opportunities and residential experiences.
Library services
The Hartwick College Library is named in honor of two sisters, Mrs. Orin L. (Helena Pruyn) Stevens and Mrs. Henry (Sarah Pruyn) German, philanthropists and generous donors to Hartwick College. Mrs. Stevens was a fashion consultant for Marshall Fields in Chicago until her retirement in 1952. Mrs. German was an elementary school teacher.
Medical services
At Perrella Health Center, our mission is to help you understand and maintain your optimum physical, emotional, intellectual, and social well-being.
To achieve this goal we practice preventative healthcare, manage acute and chronic illness, and assist students in becoming educated healthcare consumers.
Campus life
The mission of Hartwick College Campus Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment for all students, faculty, and visitors to our community.
The Department of Campus Safety operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Campus Safety consists of 12 full- and part-time safety officers and four dispatchers. Officers patrol the campus in vehicles and on foot, and routinely patrol all residential living areas, classrooms, and office areas on campus.
Sports facilities
More than half of Hartwick College students participated in sports in high school, and about a third of them belong to one or more of our 19 varsity athletic teams.
Here you’ll be surrounded by smart students who aren’t afraid of a little competition, and those who want to stay fit in body and mind.
Student clubs
The Office of Campus Activities and the Student Government Association collectively support more than 60 registered student organizations. These groups reflect our community’s diversity and contributes to the exciting co-curricular life here at Hartwick.
Students interested in creating a new club or student organization may contact the Office of Campus Activities, campusactivities@hartwick.edu. Visit the Office of Athletics for information on Intramural Sports.
Hartwick College is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) with the next evaluation visit scheduled for 2027-28, and the NY State Board of Regents.
