History
Shawnee State University's roots date back to 1945 when Ohio University established an academic center at Portsmouth High School.

Research
We have made a commitment to continuous improvement at Shawnee State University. A vital part of this commitment is the use of reliable data in making decisions. The Department of Institutional Research and Sponsored Programs supports internal departments in planning, assessment, and decision-making by performing data collection, verification, and analysis.

- We've changed our new student orientation program this summer to keep students, staff, and guests safe. You may now review your class schedule, meet with a financial aid counselor, and learn about campus resources from the comfort of your home! Our advisors, admissions associates and financial aid counselors are here for you every step of the way.
Housing services
- All of our housing units are apartments — each with a fully-equipped kitchen, living room, dining area, bathroom, bedrooms and on-site laundry facilities.
- You can choose between six different apartment complexes, each with their own floor plans — and personalities.
Library services
Thanks to the generosity of a Portsmouth family, the Shawnee State University Board of Trustees in October of 1997 named its library the Clark Memorial Library. It is dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde W. Clark, long time Portsmouth residents and supporters of the University.
Mr. Clark was born in 1896. He, along with William A. Burke and James B. Miller.

Your campus visit to Shawnee State University will include an admissions presentation (everything you need to know about applying and attending SSU!), a tour of our beautiful and compact campus, and a tour of an apartment style and/or townhouse style housing unit based on availability.

Whether in the Dungeons Crawlers or the Shawnee State Catholic Association, there's an organization for you. Join an existing organization or start your own! The possibilities are endless. Shawnee State encourages students to make their education complete by getting involved. Students who get involved enjoy their college experience and are more successful after graduation.
Accreditation
The Department of Institutional Research and Sponsored Programs provides support for the University's accreditation review process. Shawnee State University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. Shawnee State University has been accepted to membership in the Academic Quality Improvement Program(AQIP) for the Higher Learning Commission.
