History
The university opened in October 1896 as the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School (AGIS), a women-only technical school that also offered high school-level courses. In the fall of 1968, three African American women, Carolyn Burpo, Ruby Kennbrew and Dorothy (Lilly) Turner, enrolled in the university. On September 1, 1969, Alabama College was renamed the University of Montevallo.

Research
Institutional Research, Planning, and Assessment’s (IRPA) function is to support planning, assessment, and management by providing information in the form of quantitative data, qualitative evaluations, analyses and expertise to officials charged with developing, recommending or implementing University policy. We are comprised of two main components:
Institutional ResearchProvides accurate and timely information to support the University’s decision making and institutional effectiveness.
Planning and AssessmentSupports institutional strategic planning as well as all sub-units in planning and improvement activities.

The University of Montevallo Career Development Center staff is committed to assisting students with not only developing a career plan but in finding meaning and purpose in life through their chosen vocation. Students are encouraged to enter into a journey of vocational discernment, which reflects and compliments the University’s liberal arts mission.

Medical services
Student Health Services provides direct, basic medical care and serves as a referral source for students needing care beyond that available on campus. The majority of services provided are covered by a mandatory undergraduate health fee. Expenses incurred for care beyond that provided by the University are the responsibility of the student.

Sports facilities
The University of Montevallo fields 12 NCAA Division II athletic teams[18] that currently compete in the Gulf South Conference.
Men's athletics include: baseball, basketball, soccer, golf and cross-country.
Women's athletics include: basketball, soccer, golf, cross-country, tennis, volleyball and track and field.
Student clubs
At the University of Montevallo, there are over 90 student organizations…providing opportunities for every interest.
The University of Montevallo is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Educational Specialist degree.
