Alabama State University (ASU) will achieve global recognition through excellence in teaching, research and service. ASU will advance its current status as a premiere, comprehensive, Level VI regionally accredited institution, to a Doctoral/Research University (DRU) Carnegie Classification–designated institution.
Education
The students who attend ASU are as diverse as our academic offerings, with students from more than 40 states and various countries seeking a top-notch education that extends far beyond the walls of a classroom. With a 20 to 1 student-faculty ratio, students receive the personal attention, mentoring, encouragement and knowledge needed to achieve their dreams.
Research
Today, ASU is a hotbed for discovery in science---we’ve been awarded more than $7.5 million in NSF grants since 2005. Thanks to our Center for Nanobiotechnology Research, Office of Research Development and 70,000-square-foot state-of-the-art Life Sciences facility, students and faculty, like Dr. Shree Singh, are partnering with universities around the world and conducting groundbreaking research in nanobiotechnology to develop alternative energy sources and to cure and prevent disease.

Student services
The Office of Student Life seeks to enhance the student life experience by providing educational programming that promotes and encourages leadership development, self-empowerment, and opportunities for creating life-long, interpersonal relationships.
Housing services
At ASU, we know today’s students look at housing as much more than just rooms in residence halls. That’s why we have created living-learning environments for our students.
We have 13 separate residential communities at ASU, including three apartment-style clusters with multiple buildings. Most of our well-equipped residence units are equipped with twin size beds, a chest of drawers, desks, wastebaskets, chairs, window coverings, mattresses and mattress covers. Some halls feature coin-operated or swipe card machines for personal laundering.
Library services
The library was initiated in 1921 during the administration of President George Washington Trenholm. The occasion for the opening of the library was a Founder's Day. For several subsequent years this special day served as a period for "Library Showers," at which time gift books were given. This was the primary source of new acquisitions during this time.
Medical services
The Student Health Center is available for all currently enrolled Alabama State University students. Our staff is committed to providing quality, cost-effective care that meets the needs of students.
Campus life
Our location in Montgomery, the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement, offers students the unique opportunity to live, learn and grow in a city rich with culture and history. In fact, some of the most notable figures of the civil rights era – including the Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, attorney Fred Gray and the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth – are counted among ASU’s many distinguished alumni.
Sports facilities
Maintaining your physical health and well being is an important part of achieving academic success in college. At Alabama State University, you don’t need to leave campus to find a great place to work out or keep up with your fitness routine. Our campus features a variety of facilities and intramural sports programs to help you stay in shape.
Student clubs
At Alabama State University, we know there’s more to the college experience than late nights in the library and final exams. We believe in working hard and playing hard. That’s why we offer more than 50 student clubs and organizations, including sororities and fraternities, to help our students get involved and make new friends on campus.
