Francis Marion University was founded on July 1, 1970 through a special piece of legislation signed by Governor Robert McNair. The bill creating the then college, was in response to an overwhelming need for a public education institution in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina.

FM Research & Exhibition Day is a day dedicated to celebrating student projects that have been conducted throughout the school year. At FM Research & Exhibition Day, graduate and undergraduate students get the opportunity to share the work that they have completed with the FMU faculty, staff and students. Participation in FM Research & Exhibition Day is open to all students from all disciplines. All forms of presentation are welcome and encouraged. Additionally, projects of all stages (from concept to completion) are accepted.
The Student Government Association at FMU represents the student body by working to continually ensure that the FMU experience is the best it can be. SGA serves the students in areas such as campus safety, transparency and sustainability, student organization funding and overall student success. ResNet consists of the wired and wireless networks available to all FMU students living on-campus. ResNet makes it possible for residential students to connect their personal computers directly to the network. A data jack is provided for each student in their dorm or apartment within all residence halls of Francis Marion University.

Francis Marion's 468-acre main campus is rightly known for its beauty and serenity. The campus includes acres of mixed pine-hardwood and bottomland forests accessed by a series of trails. The “woodsy” feel is a fit with the surrounding countryside, but the campus trees were carefully cultivated during the early years. Thousands were planted, on what was, at inception, largely farmland. Combined with an equal number of complementary ornamental shrubs and small trees, an oasis of beauty was created.

Francis Marion University (FMU) has a beautiful campus and due to being located in South Carolina nice weather almost all year round. The class sizes are relatively small and all professors are available if there any questions. Only small negative; as great as the campus is, if you don’t have a car it is difficult getting to the city center (even so there are busses, which in my experience are a little bit unreliable). All in all, I had a great experience here at FMU.
If you're heading to law school my main recommendations for this university are: 1. Stay organized because they are many classes. 2. Take good notes because the professors are not always available for after class questions. 3. Try to work when you are studying because sometime you need to know the practical side of law. 4. Try to maintain communication with faculty members.
