Christian Brothers University

History

Christian Brothers College was founded in 1871 by members of the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Schools, an international Roman Catholic religious teaching congregation. The Memphis clergy had been determined to establish Catholic education in Memphis and envisioned not only elementary and secondary education but college education too.

Education

Educators prepared at CBU are teachers who lead and serve. CBU offers programs that meet the needs of educators and help teachers and leaders make a difference. For more than 140 years, Christian Brothers University has played a vital role in helping teachers make a difference in the lives of children. The University’s legacy of teaching goes back even further than that - the founder of the Christian Brothers order, St. John Baptist de La Salle, is the Patron Saint of teachers.

Research

The Office of Institutional Research & Effectiveness ensures that the University continually analyzes and appraises its policies, procedures and programs and that such assessment is utilized at all levels for improved decision making by the University. The Office maintains, researches, and disseminates data to inform both University officers and external agencies and organizations requesting statistics.

Campus life

When you live in the Residence Halls, you have the freedom to make your room a real home away from home. It should be a home that you feel comfortable and relaxed in after a long day of classes. Maurelian Hall is a four story building that opened in 1958. As of Fall 2014, Maurelian Hall was designated as a freshman-only residence. This residence hall is a facility with 103 rooms and is home to 165 students. Each unit consists of two suites with two bedrooms and a den area that is furnished with a love seat, table and chair.

Sports facilities

In addition to providing great academic spaces and comfortable residential areas, Christian Brothers University offers a variety of recreational facilities to make your time on campus both meaningful and fun. Basketball goals (indoor and outdoor), racquetball courts, sand volleyball, the Canale Pool, and other recreational spots are just a walk away.

Student clubs

At Christian Brothers University, we know that getting involved outside of the classroom is one of the easiest ways to give back to the community, stay connected to campus, and have fun! With nearly 40 on-campus organizations, there's a place for everyone, and if you don't see what you are interested in, starting a club or group couldn't be easier!

Christian Brothers University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award the bachelor's degree and master's degree.
