Graduate Theological Union

History

The Graduate Theological Union (GTU) was founded in 1962. The establishment marked the nation’s first successful cooperative graduate study program leading to a Doctor of Theology degree.

Education

Degrees offered include PhD and MA degrees; other professional degree programs (including DMin, STM, ThM, and MDiv) are administered by member schools.

Library services

The Flora Lamson Hewlett Library in Berkeley, together with our branch library at San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, offer a rich array of programs, services, and resources to support the study and research needs of the more than 20 member schools, academic centers, and affiliates that comprise the GTU.

Campus life

There is always something happening at the GTU. Lectures, symposia, workshops, celebrations, art exhibits, prayer, writing groups, community conversations, all bringing diverse and creative voices to engage in new levels of understanding and collaboration. Each of us can find a way to engage and contribute in our own way.

Student clubs

GTU students range in age from mid-twenties to early seventies, and have families and/or obligations within their communities, donominations, and/or professional networks. Not all live in Berkeley, and many find it necessary to work to support their studies. Community is something that is built intentionally by committed individuals. Student community provides an avenue for sharing resources and experiences, learning about faculty, making a difference.

The GTU is fully accredited by the Association of Theological Schools and the WASC Senior College and University Commission.
