History

The Monroe University's story began in 1933 when a pioneering woman named Mildred King opened the Monroe Secretarial School in the West Farms section of the Bronx. Named for U.S. President James Monroe, the school boasted just four small classrooms and had an initial class of seven students, all women.

Education

At Monroe University, they believe that real-world understanding is key to your academic journey. Hands-on learning is just part of it. The result: whether you’re an undergraduate or graduate student, you’ll be better prepared for success in your career — and in life.

Research

The institutional research arm of the office of Academic Records, Assessment, and Planning (ARAP) is responsible for providing data and information for administrative decision making. It collects and analyzes data and information, and reports the findings to University administration and others associated with the institution. It also provides data for external compliance reporting. Analysis of institutional research centers on information about students, faculty, courses, and programs.

Career

Every Monroe major includes a career advancement advisor who knows the 'ins and outs' of that degree and makes sure the curriculum incorporates the skills that are in high demand by employers. The Career Services team helps students become confident and career-ready for the workforce.  

Available on the three campuses with virtual programming also available, Career Services provides a variety of workshops and events each semester to help students prepare for a career after graduation.

Student services

A hallmark of the Monroe educational experience is the level of personal and academic support provided to students. Each student is assigned a student services advisor within the appropriate office who connects them to the campus community, ensures the student is progressing in their studies, assists them with orientation and registration and other key procedures, and facilitates communication between the student and other offices of the University.

Housing services

The six-story Gaddy Hall building provides on-campus housing for 300 freshman students. As a mixed-use building, it is also home to Gaddy Café on the first floor, the main dining hall where students can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night dining seven days a week during the semester. The building also features seven classrooms, offices for faculty, and the student mailroom.

Allison Hall is a six-story residence hall on Main Street, conveniently located near many of our classroom buildings. The shuttle stop for the Bronx campus is right in front of the building. Allison Hall rooms are furnished with a twin size bed and mattress, a chest of drawers, and an armoire for each student.

Library services

The libraries provide information and instruction to every Monroe University student as a central element of the educational experience. The collections span the entire academic curriculum, including materials of interest within and outside the scope of courses. 

ICT services

Direct IT departmental support will only be provided for College-owned desktop computers and laptops that are physically located on one of the University's campuses at the time a support request has been submitted.

Campus life

The wonderful campus in Castries has been educating students from Saint Lucia and elsewhere since 2007. The campus, located on Vide Boutielle Highway, offers students a broad array of degree programs through Monroe's Schools of Allied Health Professions, Business and Accounting, Criminal and Social Justice, Hospitality Management, and Information Technology.

Sports facilities

In 2011, Monroe University renovated the former ice rink at New Roc City into the Monroe Athletic Complex (MAC), a state-of-the-art athletic complex for students and the New Rochelle community. The centerpiece of the 45,000 square-foot arena is a 94-foot, wood-floor basketball court where the Monroe Mustangs basketball and volleyball teams play their home games. The court was delivered to Monroe from US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee.  The complex also houses a locker rooms, a large athletic training center and seating for fans. 

Student clubs

  • Allied Health Club: You'll design, implement, and evaluate health education/health promotion programs, working to reduce health disparities and improve the quality of life for Monroe students and community residents.

  • Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA): Students from all cultural backgrounds receive help with professional development and access to a nationwide network of professional members and corporate partners while connecting with other students.
  • Culinary Arts Club: Share your culinary talents at community events for the greater good and deepen your experience in dining and hospitality. 

Accreditation

Monroe University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (1007 North Orange Street, 4th Floor, MB #166  Wilmington, DE 19801 / 267-284-5011).  The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.  The University was initially accredited by the Commission on Higher Education in July 1990. Accreditation was successfully reaffirmed in 2020.

The right school

Monroe College is big on inclusion and ensuring everyone is treated fairly, this helps foster a supportive environment. You are access to your advisor to discuss your study plan. Additionally, there are the options of combining face to face interaction with virtual classes. Having this option available is ideal for the working class as well as students who want to get part-time jobs while attending school full time.

Commendable student body

Monroe College is an exceptional institution, characterized by a diverse community of individuals from various cultural backgrounds who are determined to achieve success and create a positive impact in the world. The student body at Monroe College is outstanding, with active participation from everyone, and the staff genuinely cares about the well-being of students. Various majors to choose from

Monroe College has several aspects that I appreciate. One of them is the wide range of Major careers they provide, which adds to the appeal. Additionally, the professors and staff at Monroe College are always ready to assist you whenever needed, fostering a supportive environment.
