NYU Shanghai

History

We were founded in 2012 by New York University and East China Normal University with the support of the city of Shanghai and the district of Pudong.

Education

English is the language of instruction on campus, though international students are required to study and achieve proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. The university regularly fosters opportunities for cross-cultural communication and cooperation in the classroom and through diverse extracurricular activities.

Research

NYU Shanghai undergraduates have numerous opportunities to work with professors on groundbreaking research. They may also conduct their own inquiries under the guidance of a faculty mentor and with scholarship support from the Dean’s Undergraduate Research Fund. Many NYU Shanghai students have had their findings published in peer-reviewed journals.

Career

Hundreds of graduate students make NYU Shanghai their home every year. From master’s students taking the next steps in their careers in Data Analytics and TESOL to PhD students conducting research at the frontiers of Chemistry and Neural Science, our graduate students make up a diverse and thriving community whose passions and energy enrich the university.

Student services

Along with the RA, the Office of Student Life's Residential Life team serves as an additional resource and support system to students as they navigate the university environment. The Residential Life team is responsible for maintaining an environment that supports every student’s academic goals and personal interests.

Housing services

NYU Shanghai's three residence halls at Green Center Towers, Pusan, and Jinyang offer single, double, or triple rooms. Eighteen to 20 students reside on each floor, which is overseen by one upper-class resident assistant (RA), who also serves as a peer mentor. The rooms contain basic amenities, including beds, desks, chairs, and closets. Each floor has communal bathrooms and sinks. Students also have access to shared kitchens, washers and dryers.

Library services

The NYU Shanghai Library’s primary mission is service to students and scholars. In addition to our growing local collection, all of NYU’s electronic resources are available for the Shanghai campus. Additional materials will be made available by request from NYU New York. Reference and research assistance is available in-person and via email and chat.

ICT services

Wireless IT services and a robust IT infrastructure ensure that students and faculty are always fully connected to the NYU Global Network.

Medical services

The Student Health Center at NYU Shanghai is committed to promoting a safe, informed, healthy and happy university community. We provide an array of professional services tailored to support our students' physical, emotional, and mental health needs during their time at NYU Shanghai.

Campus life

Custom built in 2012, 1555 Century Avenue serves as NYU Shanghai’s main campus and thriving intellectual center. Located in Lujiazui, Shanghai’s flourishing financial district, it is near some of the world’s most iconic buildings – the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center – and within walking distance to popular restaurants, shopping malls, and parks.

Sports facilities

Whether you’re looking to join a team sport, relax with meditative yoga, or express yourself through various forms of dance, participating in some form of physical activity will help you maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. NYU Shanghai fields competitive teams in several sports including soccer, volleyball and basketball, and we offer a variety of resources for students to stay active and fit.

Student clubs

All students are strongly encouraged to join at least one club or extra-curricular activity during their time at NYU Shanghai. The NYU Shanghai Student Government currently funds and supports more than 25 student clubs and organizations. The Office of Student Life also facilitates a variety of initiatives and programs that help break down barriers between people of different backgrounds, strengthening the culture of understanding that NYU Shanghai strives to embody.
