The University of Oulu, founded in 1958, is one of the biggest and the most multidisciplinary universities in Finland.


The Interdisciplinary University of Oulu has eight faculties. The research units of our faculties constitute a strong multidisciplinary scientific community. In addition to faculties, research is conducted in focus institutes linking disciplines, as well as other research units.


In the University of Oulu, we participate in solving global problems with our cutting-edge research. Multidisciplinary research is conducted in five focus areas and new research openings are sought particularly at interdisciplinary interfaces.  The basis for applied multidisciplinary research is created by long-term basic research.

Housing services

Incoming international students have several options on how to arrange housing, either through the local student housing foundation PSOAS or through private markets.

Student housing during Autumn term is always more full than during Spring.

Library services

  • The group study rooms are primarily intended for use by groups of two or more students. Univeristy of Oulu students can reserve them by using O365 calendars
  • The quiet reading rooms are designed for quiet study. Loud conversation, group work and use of mobile phones is not allowed. The new quiet reading room, Lukupesä, is located in the History collection room on the 2nd floor of the library.

  • ICT Services develop and provide university and Oamk students with modern and versatile IT services.

Campus life

  • The main campus in Linnanmaa is home to Faculty of Education, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Technology and  Oulu Business School. Linnanmaa campus is known for its colourful architecture.

  • Kontinkangas Welfare Campus consists of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine and the University Hospital of Oulu.

Sports facilities

Physical exercise is a good balance for studying and it supports your wellbeing. University Sports of Oulu (OKKL) offers versatile sports and wellness services to the students and staff of the universities in Oulu (University of Oulu, Oulu University of Applied Sciences and Diaconia University of Applied Sciences). The activities consist of more than 50 different sports or exercise services. You gain access to the sports and academic sport services by purchasing the Sports Pass. 

Student clubs

When you begin your studies, you will automatically become a member of the Student Union. At the beginning of the academic year, you pay the Student Union membership fee, with which you receive all membership benefits and the student card. By showing your student card, you are entitled to discounts on the train and the buses as well as at several stores and service providers. And above all, the Student Union will support you in matters related to the student’s interests in education and social policy and arrange free time activities.
