About
History
The University of Peradeniya is the heir to a sixty year old University tradition which commenced with the inception of the University of Ceylon, the first institution of its kind established in Colombo on 1 July 1942. It moved to the banks of Mahaweli River, the longest in the Country, in 1952.
Education
University of Peradeniya strives to deliver education, training and research programs by conducting professional and curriculum-based teaching and learning and conduct high quality research for national, regional and global needs whilst maintaining highest levels of efficiency, effectiveness, integrity and transparency in contributing to the development of a knowledge-based society.

Services
Housing services
The Accommodation Division is a part of the University of Peradeniya. It provides a comprehensive service to all the students of the University by administering and allocating 19 hostels in the University, with the aim of supporting the student experience by providing efficient and effective accommodation services and facilities.
Library services
The library developed into a library network comprising the Main Library and seven other branch libraries, namely Agriculture, Science, Medical, Engineering, Vet Medical, Allied Health Science and Dental libraries. The ninth library is attached to the sub-campus, Faculty of Agriculture in Mahailuppallama. The Main Library can be accessed by proceeding along the new Galaha road.
ICT services
The IT Center undertakes teaching ICT courses for undergraduates on request by different faculties . The center also conducts examinations on completion of each course. A sample test is available.
Medical services
- In catering to primary healthcare needs, the Health Centre operates a full-fledged laboratory services, 24 hour ambulance service and a preventive health care service.
- The university maintains a student counselling service to assist and guide students who have problems pertaining to academic, social and personal matters.
Student Life
Campus life
The University covers about 700 hectares of land and the developed area covering approximately 130 hectares is occupied by buildings of the Faculties, Halls of Residence, Staff bungalows etc.Throughout the campus most trees begin to bear flowers in early March signaling the coming of spring. Lovers' Lane, Kissing Bend, open-air theater and the lower Hantana Road display a rare aesthetic beauty through the rich foliage.
Sports facilities
- Indoor and outdoor sports facilities are available for students and the staff of the University. These sporting facilities includes Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Tennis, Volleyball courts, and 400 meters Cinder Track for athletics. Other than these facilities out door courts are available for Softball Cricket, Baseball and Elle.
- The University of Peradeniya has one of the largest gymnasiums in Sri Lanka. At the Gymnasium Indoor facilities are available for Badminton, Basketball, Carom, Chess, Netball, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Taekwondo and other martial arts activities. Peradeniya University has a 50 meters Swimming Pool.
