WGU was born at a meeting of the Western Governors' Association as a solution to a growing need for a college-educated workforce—a need that was not being fully met by traditional higher education. These governors, along with early and enthusiastic leadership from academic and industry innovators, built the foundation that allowed WGU to become what it is today.
WGU is a nonprofit, online university that was founded by 19 U.S. governors. However, WGU is a private university, not a state university. WGU developed out of a vision for the future of higher education that emerged among the governors of the Western Governors Association (hence our name), but WGU operates independently with its own governance structure. This allows us to keep our focus on students, following the vision that got us started.
Inequity remains one of higher education’s most pressing and persistent student success challenges. With this grant funding, WGU Labs—the university’s research and development hub and an accelerator for scalable EdTech solutions—will create a plan for research and improvement of student equity at WGU.
Western Governors University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), an institutional accreditation body of colleges and universities in a seven-state region that includes WGU’s headquarters of Utah. NWCCU provides the accreditation of many other major institutions, including the University of Washington, University of Oregon, Gonzaga University, University of Utah, and Brigham Young University, to name a few.

As someone living in Quebec, I was looking for a degree that won't cost me an arm and a leg but will also allow me to work in the US. I was starting to get really impatient because I didn't find what I was looking for. All the US accredited universities costed thousands of dollars. I came across WGU when scrolling through Tiktok. I decided to learn more about it. What attracted my attention was the 6 months model. You pay $4000USD for a 6 months period where you can take as many courses as you can. I am on my way to graduate in May.
I have enjoyed my experience at WGU and highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to earn Undergraduate or Graduate Degrees in the field of education. Each degree that I have earned from WGU has prepared me for my career.
