History
It is forty years since the Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti campuses were established as tertiary education institutes in Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne respectively. As a result of the merger between the former Tairāwhiti Polytechnic and EIT Hawke’s Bay in 2010, EIT is the major provider of higher education on the east coast of the North Island.
Education
Eastern Institute of Technology Hawke's Bay offers an extensive range of NZ study programmes and courses. Study on campus, online, full time or part-time.
- EIT is the tertiary provider for Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast. On offer is an extensive range of programmes of more than 160 postgraduate, degree, diploma and certificate level programmes, across an impressive range of subject areas.
Research
- EIT is a vibrant, innovative and research-led tertiary education institute. Research emphasis is placed on community-centred research and Rangahau Māori in collaboration with East Coast industry, iwi and organisations, as well as with colleagues in Te Pūkenga and other tertiary institutions.

Student services
The Eastern Institute of Technology offers a wide range of support services to enable you to make the most of your tertiary study opportunities. We offer an ongoing Careers Counselling Service, a Learning Skills Centre for individual and group assistance, a Disability Liaison Service provides a comprehensive range of services to ensure students have equal study opportunities.
Housing services
There are many different types of accommodation available for international students.
Accommodation options include homestay with a New Zealand family or flatting at the Student Village right across the road from EIT’s Hawke’s Bay Campus. There are also private accommodation options available.
- EIT Auckland has identified two accommodation options that may be suitable for you, including homestay with a New Zealand family or flatting at one of our partner apartment complexes.
Library services
- The EIT Libraries provide study and research facilities for students, staff and community members in a relaxed and friendly environment.
- Resources include books, journals, newspapers, electronic resources, DVDs and CDs. Computers, laptops and laptop connections are also available for student use.
Medical services
EIT Hawke's Bay:
The Doctors Napier Ltd provides general medical services for all students at their EIT Hawke’s Bay Health Centre, located in K block on the Taradale campus.
EIT Tairāwhiti:
EIT Tairāwhiti offers students FREE access to the nurse-led Health and Wellness Centre run by Turanga Health.
The Health and Wellness Centre is located in Room PR107, R Block, on the main campus.
Campus life
EIT│Te Pūkenga in Hawke’s Bay is one of New Zealand’s most attractive campuses with superb architecture and shaded outdoor areas for study on warm days. EIT│Te Pūkenga in Tairāwhiti has two campuses located in the heart of Gisborne, near the Taruheru River, and you can’t get more central than EIT│Te Pūkenga Auckland’s location on Queen Street!
Sports facilities
EIT Sport Science Services operate out of two labs; one in the Pettigrew.Green Arena (PGA) in Taradale and the other at the EIT Institute of Sport and Health (EIT ISH) in the Mitre 10 Sports Park in Hastings.
Some equipment can also be used off-site. And if you want to train for competitions in hot climates the laboratory at EIT ISH can be heated to around 35 degrees for indoor heat training.
Student clubs
Younited Students’ Association serves students by acting as the voice of the student body, advocating student issues, and promoting the social, cultural, recreational and educational interests of students on all Eastern Institute of Technology campuses including online students.

All degree and diploma qualifications taught at EIT are registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) which is the New Zealand Government’s official registry for all qualifications on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.
