History

The origins of the University of Huddersfield can be traced back to the 19th century. We have a strong focus on quality teaching and student experience and have received numerous accolades recognising this. In 2013, we were named Times Higher Education University of the Year. In 2017, we were the first university to win the Global Teaching Excellence Award. More recently, the University was awarded an outstanding Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2023.

Education

Distance learning, also known as ‘online learning’ is where you study a course online. This gives you the flexibility to study anywhere, anytime, and conveniently fit your studies around other commitments such as work and family.At Huddersfield, your online teaching and learning takes place through Brightspace, an industry leading Virtual Learning Environment. And you’ll be taught by experienced academics, many of whom are research-active, pioneers in their respective fields. In fact, our staff rank in the top three in England for the proportion who hold doctorates, have higher degrees and hold teaching qualifications (HESA 2022). We are also first in the country for National Teaching Fellowships, which mark the UK’s best lecturers in Higher Education, winning a total of 22 since 2008 (2023 data).

Research

The University is committed to the pursuit of research on a global scale. This was recognised in the latest Research Excellence Framework where we were ranked in the top 50 UK universities for Research Power, and three quarters of all our research was recognised as world leading and internationally excellent (REF 2021).Huddersfield is home to a range of research centres and institutes working to address global challenges. We also have a Graduate School for postgraduate researchers, which provides tailored support and opportunities to maximise your potential.Some of our research degrees can be studied via distance learning too.

We have an impressive record for graduate employment, with 96% of our undergraduate and 97.8% of postgraduate students in work or further study within fifteen months after graduating (HESA Graduate Outcomes 2020/21, UK domiciled, other activities excluded).

Library services

Through our online library, you’ll have access to 523,000 electronic books and 125,000 journals covering a wide array of subject areas. We also have subject specialist librarians who you can contact online, as well as a 24/7 IT Support helpline.

Campus life

The University of Huddersfield campus is home to a range of exciting top-class facilities, with a second National Health Innovation Campus currently under construction.Whilst you won’t be studying on campus as a distance learning student, you’ll have the opportunity to come onto campus for your graduation. Here, you’ll be able to meet your tutors and coursemates in-person and explore our beautiful campus, its facilities and the surrounding area.
