History

Governors State University (GovState) was founded in 1969, originally as an upper-division institution with a primary focus of serving community college graduates pursuing baccalaureate degrees. During the five intervening decades, GovState has grown to become the only regional, public, comprehensive university in Chicago’s south suburban area,

Education

Each of our colleges includes both majors and minors to prepare you for a great career--or to continue your education. Whether you come to GovState as a freshman, a transfer student, a candidate for a master's or doctor's degree, or a Dual Degree Program student.

Student services

The Office of International Services (OIS) welcomes you to Governors State University (GSU). OIS serves all international students, international faculty, staff, study abroad students and their families.

Library services

  • In-depth research assistance from a Faculty Librarian.
  • Assistance from a Writing Center tutor available on a walk-in basis.
  • Instruction and workshops on library resources and academic applications.
  • Borrowing from GSU Library and other libraries for journal articles and books unavailable in the GSU Library.

Medical services

Governors State University Counseling & Wellness Center (CWC), in partnership with Advocate Health Care, provides comprehensive medical, mental health, and case management services. The CWC’s mission is to help improve GSU students’ mental health, academic experiences, and overall well-being through facilitating personal, emotional, and social growth so that they can achieve their goals.

Campus life

Prairie Place, the first on-campus residence at Governors State, recently opened in Fall 2014.  Form great friendships that will stay with you for a lifetime.  This is a true living and learning community.

Sports facilities

When you are a student at Governors State University, you’ll find fitness and recreation opportunities that suit your style – and your schedule – from the Athletic and Recreation Center’s free weights, exercise machines, and cardiovascular equipment to a 167,000 gallon Olympic-style lap pool, gymnasium with full-sized basketball court and racquetball court.
