History

In October 1821 the School held its first lecture at St Cecilia’s Concert Hall in Niddry Street, Edinburgh. The subject: chemistry. Over 300 people packed the venue. Several hundred were turned away. Within a month over 450 students had enrolled. Thirty years later over 700 Mechanics Institutes had been established across Britain. Emigrants took the movement as far as Australia and America.

Research

Heriot-Watt is globally recognized for pioneering research and innovation, changing the world and transforming lives. Our research focuses on real world issues and we are ranked in the top 10 in the UK for industry income. This is based on the value of industry research income per member of academic staff. Over 80% of academic staff are engaged in research at internationally recognized levels, delivering research as diverse as providing gender equality for deaf people, helping to manage risk in the insurance industry and enhancing oil extraction from the North Sea. Our excellent facilities, highly rated teaching and world-reaching research activity provide an exceptional teaching and learning experience.

Over 86 per cent of our postgraduate students go on to graduate level jobs or further study within six months of graduating. Our degrees are career-focused and relevant to the needs of business and industry. Student services

We have new, state-of-the-art halls of residence on our Edinburgh Campus which provide spacious student accommodation. Postgraduate students are housed in self-catering halls, most with en-suite facilities and internet access, with wi-fi throughout.  For more information on student accommodation at our Scottish Border Campus, please consult the university website.

Library services

The Information Services at Heriot-Watt provides 5 campus libraries offering a variety of study environments, the latest learning technologies and an extensive collection of over 150,000 printed books, access to nearly 50,000 electronic journals, 270 databases and 71,000 e-books. 

ICT services

Our IT services provide PC labs, wifi, printers/copiers/scanners, the virtual learning environment (VISION), email and free and discounted software.

Medical services

We understand that your physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing are important in helping you to make the most out of your time at the University. At our Edinburgh Campus we have a purpose-built health centre housing the University Health Service and Dental Practice, which provides a full range of UK National Health Service (NHS) medical and dental services.

Student Life

Sports facilities

First-class sports facilities can be found at the world-renowned Oriam, Scotland’s National Sports Performance Centre, which opened on the Heriot-Watt Edinburgh campus in 2016. This cutting-edge development transforms Heriot-Watt into the training hub for, among others, Scotland's national football and rugby squads. Oriam adds to Heriot-Watt's well-established sports facilities which are already some of the best in the country. The new multi-purpose development will support you to develop your full potential as an athlete, making our Edinburgh Campus a vibrant place of high-level sport. 

Student clubs

Outside of academic studies, students can partake in sports clubs run by the established Sports Union. There are currently 30 sports clubs at the University, and there are annual social events that run alongside the clubs for those students involved. There are also over 50 societies for the students to become part of, which are run by the Student Union. On site students can also find a nightclub, an advice centre and a student shop.
