History

The University of Malta traces its origins to the founding of the Collegium Melitense which was set up through direct papal intervention on 12 November 1592. This college was run by the Jesuits on the lines of their other colleges established elsewhere and known as 'Collegia Externorum', catering for non-Jesuit students. 

Education

UM is committed to high standards of research and teaching and every member of staff at UM plays an important role and contributes to outstanding student experience.

Today UM is composed of fourteen faculties, a number of interdisciplinary institutes and centres, three schools and a junior college. 

Besides the main campus, situated at Msida, there are three other campuses: Valletta, Marsaxlokk, Gozo.

Research

At UM research projects address current needs and opportunities, as well as those that may affect the country in the future. This is done in conjunction with Government and private industry, and also by participating in EU research programmes and funding.

Housing services

A number of you have booked or will book a room at the University Residence. Information about booking a room at the University Residence is available online. Bookings are to be made directly with the Residence and you are strongly advised to read the terms and conditions before placing your booking.

Library services

The Library’s mission is to support the University’s teaching and research programmes by providing adequate scholarly information resources, emerging technologies and user support services.  

ICT services

IT Services manages the wireless network within the University of Malta. UM staff, students and visitors can connect their devices to the campus network to get access to:

  • the Internet and information available on the University Intranet, including the Library e-journals, eSIMS and VLE
  • UM email and services available through G Suite for Education
  • IT Services printing facilities.

Medical services

The Health and Wellness Centre at the Msida Campus offers services aimed at enhancing the wellness of UM staff and students.

Campus life

  • The main campus, the University of Malta Msida Campus (also known as Tal-Qroqq), is where most of the activity takes place.
  • The foundation stone of the campus at Msida was laid on 22 September 1964 by the Rt. Hon. Duncan Sandys, the then Commonwealth Secretary. The total area of the Msida Campus is 250,207 square metres.

Sports facilities

The University sports and recreational facilities are made available to all students upon request. Outdoor facilities include a football pitch, an athletics track and two 5-a-side football courts, whilst a multi-purpose sports hall is available for various sports activities including handball. 

Student clubs

UM has several student societies that are recognised by Senate and are an integral part of campus life. These societies offer students the chance to become involved in interests other than those that are purely academic and to develop a network of friends, besides broadening the outlook to life.
