Department of Geography

The University of Leicester was founded almost a hundred years ago in the aftermath of the Great War. The men and women who built this new institution hoped that it would be not only a living memorial to the darkness of their recent past, but a beacon of hope for the future. Their aim was that sacrifices made in war should be commemorated through education and research that would change the world for the better.

Top reasons to study here

  • Discovering innovative ways to change the world for the better.
  • We are delivering this ambition.
  • Students and staff are at the heart of our ambition and it is they that will help us deliver it.

Student services

Studying at Leicester can be very fulfilling and a passport to a successful life and career. We are recognised across the world for the quality of our teaching and student experience. We have a wide range of support available and our International Office is on hand to offer help and guidance.

Housing services

Living in halls of residence will be one of the highlights of your university experience and where better to start your new life at university than our Oadby Student Village? You'll be in halls dedicated to undergraduates so that you and your fellow first years can bond and find your feet together. Alternatively, our City Living location offers accommodation on the University’s doorstep, with easy access to campus facilities, the city and the train station.

Our postgraduate accommodation is self-catered, allowing you extra independence and flexibility to organise your life around your studies. You’ll be just on the University’s doorstep, with easy access to campus facilities, the city and the train station.

Library services

When you register with the University you automatically become a member of the library. Your department will give you a student card. This is also your library card. Further information is provided in the Joining the Library section.

We have books, journals, DVDs, videos and CDs which you can borrow. They are on open-access shelves. You do not have to ask for them, you can get them yourself.

ICT services

There are 350 PCs within the David Wilson Library for use by students and staff. You will require a University IT account to login to these machines.

Medical services

A healthy and balanced life may not be traditionally associated with university, but good health is very important to balance out the inevitable late nights and intense studying. Our Healthy Living Service is here to direct and refer you to appropriate health care services at times of ill health.

Campus life

Our compact campus offers the best of both worlds. It’s small enough that you'll always see a friendly face but big enough to make new friends. Packed with excellent facilities and services our campus is within easy reach of one of the UK’s most vibrant cities.

As a true student city, Leicester has a huge variety of bars and clubs offering student nights and discounts.

If you love live music, Leicester has so much to offer – much more than you might think! We have our own O2 Academy on campus with loads of top bands.

The Highcross shopping centre is an awe-inspiring mix of big name and designer shops. If you are searching for a one stop shopping experience, then look no further.

Sports facilities

Whether you have played before or there is a new sport youd like to try, our Students Union has more than 30 sports societies welcoming students at any level. Sports range from Trampolining to Tae Kwon-Do and Kabaddi to Kayaking. If your sport isnt represented wed love you to start your own society and well give you all the support you need.

Student clubs

Our award winning Students Union is the social hub of the campus, both during the day and after the sun goes down.

Between lectures you can pick up a coffee at our very own Starbucks and then drink it with your friends on the sofas in the Square. This is your living room on campus, the spacious central meeting area of the Percy Gee Building. While youre there, why not stock up on stationary in the Union branch of Rymans or organise your finances with the help of advisers in the onsite Santander bank.
