History

The University of Hull was founded in 1927, originally as University College Hull. The foundation stone was laid the following year by the Duke of York (later King George VI).

Our motto, Lampada Ferens, translates as ‘carrying the light of learning’. As England’s 14th oldest university, we’ve shared that light with thousands of people from across the world.

We are committed to guiding you towards achieving your academic, career, and personal aspirations. From the moment you join us to after you graduate, our support continues.

Our student services are located in the Central Hub on campus, as well as on our online student portal.

Upon confirming your place, we’ll work with you to address any support needs, fostering an inclusive environment.

Your academic success is supported with a personal academic supervisor, as well as comprehensive study skills services that include researching, writing, referencing and presentation skills.

Our experts also offer financial, mental health, and disability services support, to help you thrive during your time at university.

Housing services

Our modern campus accommodation offers a perfect home-away-from-home environment for our students. Living on campus places you are at the heart of university life, with easy access to lectures, the gym and the Students’ Union.

Our accommodation guarantee: All new full-time undergraduate students are guaranteed a single-person room within our University owned, managed or directed accommodation if you apply by 1 October.

With over 2,300 rooms available, our campus accommodation caters to a variety of preferences and needs.

With prices starting at £157 per week, your rent is one simplified bill – WiFi, utility bills, and insurance are all included.

Library services

Situated at the heart of the campus, Brynmor Jones Library is a superb learning space with over a million books and journals, there are more than 400 open access PCs, plus bookable rooms for both group work and quiet study.

Facilities include a café with barista coffee, an art gallery, and a top-floor observatory offering stunning views of the city of Hull.

ICT services

The University has more than 400 open access PCs available in the Brynmor Jones Library on campus.

We have fast WiFi across the campus, including our accommodation, so you can stay connected wherever you are.

Although the majority of teaching will be in person on campus, lectures and many other teaching activities will also be captured digitally and available on demand.

Campus life

Amidst our traditional, ivy-clad redbrick buildings, you'll also discover modern structures of steel and glass, symbolising our commitment to providing state-of-the-art facilities for a new generation of learners.

In our lively Students' Union you'll find a small supermarket, a Wetherspoons pub, and our own on-campus nightclub, Asylum, renowned for hosting live concerts by big-name artists. Additionally, our campus boasts a sports centre, ensuring all your recreational needs are met without leaving the premises. 

Sports facilities

Whether you want something competitive or just for fun, there are a huge range of clubs and campus sports programmes you can join whenever you like. We have invested £17million investment in sports facilities, which include:

  • 4 floodlit artificial pitches with Sport Pavilion
  • A Performance Zone with bespoke strength and conditioning facilities
