History

The University was formed on 18 November 2010 through the merger of the University of Wales Lampeter and Trinity University College Carmarthen, under Lampeter’s Royal Charter of 1828. On the 1st of August 2013, Swansea Metropolitan University became part of UWTSD.t of UWTSD.

Student services

We are ranked 11th in the UK for Student Experience, (Daily Mail League Table 2024).  UWTSD’s Student Union is a student-led charity. It operates separately from the university, but works with us for the good of every student here.

When you start your degree, you become one of the newest members of a thousands-strong student community. You’re signed up to the SU automatically – and it’s completely free.

Housing services

  • Accommodation: If you decide to live away from home UWTSD offers a range of options to help you create the university experience, you want: 
  • On-Campus Halls: You will enjoy en-suite rooms with shared facilities, placing you right at the heart of student life. Our Carmarthen campus provides on-site accommodation, guaranteed for first-year students, keeping you close to classes, the library, and key services.
  • Off-Campus Accommodation: If you would prefer more independence, you can opt for private rentals or purpose-built student accommodation close to the campuses in Swansea, Cardiff, London, and Birmingham. These offer a mix of social and private living arrangements within easy reach of university facilities. 

Library services

Our libraries have a wide range of facilities and study areas, designed to suit all learning styles. UWTSD provides collections developed to reflect the research and teaching of academic departments, a vast array of electronic resources, and support from expert staff. 

ICT services

The University's IT support team ensures a smooth digital experience for students. They provide Wi-Fi access, Office 365, printing, and learning platforms like Moodle. Medical services

We operate a professional Wellbeing team which seeks to support students through their studies via the provision of a wellbeing advice centre and counselling services. All students at the University also have access to self-help wellbeing tools and resources as well as a 24/7 student helpline to provide advice and guidance across a range of topics.

Our campuses offer bright, open teaching and learning spaces, state-of-the-art computer suites, on-campus theatres, well-equipped libraries, artist studios, specialist workshops, gyms, and much more.

You will benefit from a dedicated support network, including career services, wellbeing resources, and academic guidance. Small class sizes mean you will enjoy a friendly and supportive environment, allowing you to build connections with peers and lecturers.

We offer a range of cutting-edge facilities, providing you with the resources you need for your studies. Highlights include specialist art and design studios, advanced workshops for engineering, fully equipped computer suites, and immersive rooms.

Sports facilities

We provide excellent sports facilities and activities for everyone, from elite athletes to recreational users. Swansea gives access to venues like the LC2, with a gym, pool, and climbing wall, plus the nearby Gower Peninsula for surfing, climbing, and biking. It is a dynamic hub combining modern facilities with breathtaking natural surroundings.

Our Carmarthen campus features a Strength and Conditioning Gym, 3G Training Pitch, Human Performance Lab, swimming pool, Sports Hall, and Climbing Wall. Football squads train at Richmond Park, a UEFA-standard venue, while rugby players use Carmarthen Athletic RFC’s Indoor 3G Barn. Across all campuses, Wales’ landscapes inspire endless outdoor adventures.

Student clubs
