History

While UHI is Scotland's newest university many of its 10 colleges and research institutions have longer histories, the earliest having been founded in the 19th century. The UHI network has had a unique structure and the way that it has evolved as a multi-campus institution has been constrained by a legislative framework that deals with further and higher education separately.

Education

At UHI, you will never just be a number - wellbeing, learning, financial and careers support are available every step of the way. Thanks to our smaller class sizes, we hold personalised student support at the heart of everything we do.

Combining academic excellence, vocational training, and industry expertise with our personalised approach, we help students find their path, building their skills and confidence to prepare them for success.

Research

We offer unparalleled natural laboratories and opportunities to support world-class research across a wide range of disciplines. Our researchers work across teams, networks and locations throughout the region and internationally.

Career

Our programmes are designed with employability in mind. Several programmes have recorded a 100% employment rate within 15 months of graduating, including our BSc (Hons) Environmental Science, BSc (Hons) Geography, and BSc (Hons) Forestry and Treescapes Management.

Housing services

We have a range of accommodation options available to students, from our own student residences to private rented local accommodation.

Library services

MultiSearch is the library search engine, searching many physical and digital sources at the same time across our 70 campuses and research centres.

Medical services

Most Student Route Visa applicants who are applying for a visa of longer than six months are subject to an Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £1,035 per year as part of their visa application.

This entitles students to access the UK’s National Health Service free-of-charge. In Scotland this also includes prescriptions, dental examinations, and eye examinations.

Campus life

We offer you the choice of studying at one of our 10 colleges and research centres, over 70 local learning centres, or online from wherever you are.

Sports facilities

Local on-campus facilities will vary - however, our partnership with High Life Highland leisure centres, community centres, and community schools means a big range of gym and sports facilities across the region are open to our students.

Student clubs

Your Students' Association helps operate a huge range of student-led clubs, societies and sports teams across the university partnership.

Highlands Scenic Study

Overall the University of the Highlands and Islands is a relatively good place to study, there are many options for courses and if you live in the local area it is very affordable. The university is very modern and provides many scenic views, it is also very close to the city centre as it only takes a ten minute walk/ 10 minute bus ride into the centre.

Budget cuts affecting quality

Due to the recent cuts within education, Perth College UHI took a major hit and resulted in less staff for students. This meant less overall support for students as 2 classes were being taught at the same time.
