Friedrich Schiller University Jena

History

Its foundation in 1558 meant political change and an open commitment to freedom of belief and consciousness. Since its opening, the University has put Jena on the map internationally as a centre of academia. Today, it is the largest higher education institution and the only comprehensive University in the German state of Thuringia, and it attracts students of all subjects.

Education

The FSU Jena still maintains the sense of innovation which characterized its early period, and today it views itself as a forward-looking hub for new research fields and emerging generations of scientists. As a result, the University traditionally thinks and operates on an interdisciplinary and international basis.

Research

Light-Life-Liberty: Friedrich Schiller University Jena pools its top research and culture of interdisciplinary study within these three profile lines.

The strong third-party funding availability at the FSU Jena is based on an outstanding foundation of individual research and coordinated research projects and networks, supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the European Union (EU) and many others. Moreover, the University operates as a partner to non-university research centres, research-driven companies and well-known cultural institutions on both a regional and national basis.

Career

Who can use our services? All students of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. We would like to make their entry to the labour market easier, help them find their career path, and go step by step along it.

In addition to our extensive advisory services, we also organize various events, e.g. workshops dealing with different aspects of career. We present companies and organize company visits in Thuringia. Current events can be found

Student services

The Student Service Centre comprises the most important services the university provides for students. The student data administration staff, the advisory service staff and the staff from the thoska office will be glad to help you.

Housing services

Due to the housing shortage in Jena we advise you to look for a room/flat as soon as poosible and to also consider moving to one of the surrounding cities (for example Weimar or Erfurt.) The Studierendenwerk Thüringen offers rooms in dorms and apartments for students. Apply here in any case and note the application deadlines (15 January and 15 July.) If you wish or need to search for a room on the private market, please use our list of useful links.

Library services

The permanent subcommittee for library issues (library committee) is concerned with the preparation of draft proposals in all matters of the Thuringian State and University Library (ThULB). Its deals with essential issues of the ThULB (e.g. strategic development, media structure, course structure, ressource allocations) and essential questions around the use and operation of the library.

Campus life

The student services organization Studierendenwerk Thüringen manages 21 halls of residence in Jena with a total of 3,000 places. There are a few individual apartments, however, most students stay in single rooms in shared flats with between one and eight other students, who share a kitchen and a bathroom.

The rent (approx. €200–350 per month) is fixed for a period of 6 months. This means that you have to pay higher monthly rent for a shorter period of use. The Studierendenwerk requires a deposit of €300 after concluding the tenancy agreement. The application deadlines are 15 January and 15 July for the following semester.
