History

The University of Thessaly was founded in 1984 and has elected the first Rectorate Board in 1998. Its administrative and academic centre is in the city of Volos. In order to serve the needs of the region of Thessaly, its first Departments were based on agricultural, educational and technological sciences.

  • Today, University of Thessaly, with 37 Departments and 8 schools, is the third biggest University in Greece, with its own identity and with a prominent position in our national educational system. University of Thessaly provides 105 undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and extra-curricular modules in specific research and business fields.
  • It is known for its excellent research performance and outstanding scientific achievements, in accordance with the international standards. The excellent equipped Laboratories of the different Departments and Research Units have a number of well-trained researchers to support them.

Career

The Bureau of Career and Employment (B.C.E.) of the University of Thessaly is a new unit, whose role is to formulate the strategy, vision and policies of the University regarding labor market liaising and the professional careers of its graduates. In this context, B.C.E. coordinates the Units – and their activities – under its supervision, implements joint publicity and sensitization activities, manages and operates an integrated database and is responsible for the evaluation and quality control of all activities undertaken by the Bureau and it affiliated Units.

Student services

The Career Office of the University of Thessaly is mainly associated with the effective transition of its graduates to the labour market.

The main objective of the Liaison Office of the University of Thessaly is the undertaking of every required action and initiative aiming at:

  • the promotion and dissemination of results of the scientific research carried out in the University of Thessaly, in the form  either of new knowledge or  of specific products,
  • the provision of specialized scientific and technical services to all interested users  and
  • the economic exploitation of the results of the university research.

Housing services

Accommodation with a very small charge is provided to eligible ( according to financial criteria) students in the city of Volos, where there is a Student Residence Hall.

There is also an accommodation grant of 100 € per month for the undergraduate foreign students of countries outside EU. For the Greek students and also the students of countries members of EU there is an accommodation grant of 1000 € per year depending on academic and financial criteria.

Library services

The statement of the Library's mission and aims constitutes its roadmap in the daily practice field, as well as for planning short-term and long-term actions regarding the development and upgrade of the Library's information services and internal operations. This set of objectives is revised following the dictates of new developments in the Library's direct and indirect environment.

Campus life

The “Pedion Areos” Campus (Athinon & Sekeri Str.) used by the Departments of the School of Engineering. The Campus includes the renovated buildings of the former Water Pump Manufacturing Paparrigas Factory (where the Departments of Architecture, Civil and Mechanical Engineering operate) and the new building of the Department of Planning and Regional Development, which is a modern construction with an impressive roof.

Sports facilities

The PEO aims at encouraging the students of the University of Thessaly to participate in Sport activities, to keep fit and strengthen body and soul through physical training and rivalry. It also aims at organizing several championships among the different Departments of the University and finally at participating in interuniversity sports events.

Student clubs

  • The Theatre Group has an active artistic presence with many successful performances and creative work since 2006.
  • The persons participating in the Theatre Group are all students of the different Departments of the University of Thessaly. Working all together makes them learn how to cooperate and express themselves through art.

The university is also ranked amongst top 1500 universities worldwide and 10th in the country by UniRank. University of Thessaly welcomes a number of international students each year and is accredited by Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs of Greece.
