An academic institution since the 19th century it officially became a university in 1992. The present Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan, took over the job in January 2007. At the time, he was the youngest Vice-Chancellor in the UK. His strategy for the university during this time has been to lead an "inspiring, innovative University of international renown". 


The University of Huddersfield focuses a considerable proportion of its resources and personnel into ensuring the highest quality of teaching, combined with a progressive and industry-relevant curriculum.  

The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) shows that the University of Huddersfield’s teaching staff are the best qualified in England across a range of measures. 94 percent of lecturers hold specific teaching qualifications, 96 percent of lecturers have higher education academic qualifications, the highest percentage in the country, and 77 percent of those hold doctorates (HESA, 2022). 


Huddersfield has a well-established Research Excellence Framework as the university submitted 589 staff across nineteen Units of Assessment (UoA) to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, receiving outstanding results. It has climbed more than seventeen places since 2014 to rank within the top 50 institutions in the UK. Two-thirds of its research portfolio is world-leading, and it sits within the top 20 universities for increasing research power. With world-class facilities in a forward-thinking supportive environment Huddersfield is an excellent choice for researchers from all over the world.

Housing services

Huddersfield has great accommodation for students with a mix of properties available. 

  • HudLets, are based in the Students’ Union on campus and provide impartial advice about housing options in Huddersfield, from family accommodation to HMO’s where students can share a house. They also offer support and guidance. HudLets ensures high-quality accommodation at fair prices, by working closely with student halls of residences and private landlords in the local area. 
There are plenty of other options around the town such as student halls operated by iQ Student Accommodation (Aspley House, Little Aspley House, and Castings House) and HOST (Saw Mill, Snow Island and Firth Point).

Library services

The facilities at Huddersfield are world-class. This includes a well-resourced 6-floor Library consisting of 1,200 study spaces, 530 state of the art PCs, 150 laptops and Mac books, over 330,000 books and journal articles in print, millions of digital books, and journal articles, offering everything needed for academic and personal success. Students can loan books and laptops 24 hours a day.

The University of Huddersfield is passionate about providing excellent health and wellbeing support to all their students. 

When international students arrive on campus, they are encouraged to register at the University Health Centre. This is located on campus and doctors, nurses, and physios on hand to help.  . 

Campus life

The University of Huddersfield is an award-winning, modern university with state-of-the-art facilities located in the centre of a multicultural and thriving town. 

Huddersfield’s proud industrial heritage is evident on campus, with beautifully converted stone mills and a working canal running through the middle of campus. With large recent investment the campus is also home to impressive research facilities and outstanding student outlets. 

The National Health Innovation Campus will open in 2024. Which is a seven-acre site, for up to seven buildings, all built to the WELL building standard. It will be home to the Health and Wellbeing Academy, World-leading research facilities and clinical teaching facilities.  

Student clubs

There are students from over 100 different countries on campus and there are over 60 global societies. This is a fantastic way to make new friends and learn more about other cultures. 

There are also over 100 academic and sports societies, from sewing to Frisbee  you’ll find something for you and it is a great way to make friends.
