Your complete guide to studying Secondary Education

Everything you need to know about studying Secondary Education

part of Education & Training

Secondary Education teaches you how to hone the basic knowledge primary school children have, using in-depth classes, advanced concepts, and more challenging homework and evaluations. You will specialise in a discipline, such as English, History, Geography or a Foreign Language and teach it to different classes and student groups.

During a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Secondary Education, you can expect to take classes on educational psychology, adolescent development, active learning, pedagogy for diverse learners, classroom management, teaching and learning in the digital world, etc.

As a future secondary school teacher, you will work with children aged between 11 and 18. This depends on the type of institution where you are employed. For example, in some countries, primary school takes 8-9 years to finish, and it is followed by 4 years of high school. In others, secondary education is divided into middle school or junior high school and high school.

While you will have broad knowledge of multiple subjects, you will only teach one. With your help, students who excel in that subject can go on and enrol at top universities or colleges.

To become a successful secondary school teacher, you need to master interpersonal, presentation, and organisation skills. Emotional intelligence and the ability to keep students interested will make the difference between being a stand-out or a regular teacher.

Secondary Education graduates can work for public or private secondary schools, junior high schools or high schools. After some years of experience, there’s also the option to offer paid tutoring.

You should know that Secondary Education is also referred to as Secondary Teaching.
