History

Instituto Superior Técnico was created in 1911 following the division of Lisbon Industrial and Commercial Institute. The first director was engineer Alfredo Bensaude, who promoted a profound renewal in engineering teaching methods by creating the first engineer courses: Mining, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical-Industrial.

Education

Instituto Superior Técnico offers a wide range of academic programmes (1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles), attempting to respond to market changes and investing in continuous training.

Técnico has increased its innovation capacity over the past years, namely through the development of new technologies that will bring added value and generate economic development.

In this context, postgraduate training appears as an experimental field on technological innovation and scientific research. Técnico has had a prominent role in this area, standing out from other higher education institutions.

Research

Research at IST is organised in 23 Centres and Institutes that pursue challenging research programmes with a strong social impact in the fields of Architecture, Engineering, Science and Technology.

These Centres and Institutes address a multidisciplinary research in an international and multicultural atmosphere.

Career

The placement of graduate students in the labour market is one of the priorities at Técnico. Students and recruiters have at their disposal several programmes and activities that improve job matching, internships and summer jobs, among others.

Técnico has created the Técnico’s Students’ Career Discovery Program aiming to provide its graduates the best options within their professional area and provide companies the opportunity to know suitable high-potential employees.

Several initiatives have been implemented within Career Discovery@Técnico, such as the IST Career Weeks, the AEIST Jobshop and the IST Summer Internships. Companies can manage and disclose job offers through the IST Job Bank.

Student services

The Student Support Unit (NAPE) promotes the integration of students at IST. This team works with the students and supports all kind of activities that contribute to an effective involvement of the academic community, as well as promoting IST among secondary school students.

The main activities of NAPE covers mainly two specific areas:

  • Welcome, integration and monitoring , of students, specially the new 1st year students, foreign students and other students entering IST for the first time.
  • Diffusion/Admission, this is done by organizing study visits to IST and by direct contact with secondary schools, guiding and motivating future applicants to higher education.

Housing services

Técnico Lisboa seeks to provide all foreign students spending a period of studies at our college with assistance in finding accommodation. Further to students’ requests the Student Support Unit decided to make a list of residences that rent rooms. Therefore, by means of this list, students may establish direct contact with several accommodation offers and therefore select the opportunities that suit them most.
