History

Cal U traces its roots back to 1852, when the fledgling community of California spent tax money and donations to create an Academy for kindergarten through college-level courses. In 1864, it purchased 10 acres (4.0 ha) and moved to what is now the center of its present location, and a year later the school received a charter to be a normal school.

Housing services

Accommodations for students with disabilities are approved through the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD). It is the responsibility of the student to adhere to OSD procedures for self-identifying, providing documentation to substantiate requests and requesting reasonable accommodations in a timely manner. Students must meet the academic/technical standards of the classes/programs for which they are applying and/or in which they are enrolled.

ICT services

  • Cable television service is provided for every room in student housing and various academic spaces throughout the campus. Effective October 29, 2014, all channels are provided in a 'QAM 256' digital format.
  • Simply join the CALUGUEST SSID and launch a web browser. A username/password will be texted and/or emailed to you upon completion of the form.

Medical services

The Wellness Center is available to students 24 hours/Monday-Friday, 12 hours 7pm-7am Saturday and Sunday.  A full-time staff of registered nurses is on duty during hours of operation. A university physician conducts regular hours and a Nurse Practitioner is available Monday-Friday.  A university health form must be completed by your family doctor and returned. 

Campus life

Cal U's 294-acre campus is nestled on a bend of the Monongahela River in the borough of California, Pa., 35 miles south of Pittsburgh. One of the first things you'll notice when you visit for the first time is the natural beauty. Tree-lined lawns, broad walkways and exquisite landscaping surround restored historic buildings and new residence halls that have been recognized by the National Building Museum as among the finest in the nation.The Arboretum at California University of Pennsylvania is a public garden encompassing our 92-acre lower campus. We're building an extensive collection that includes examples of nearly every tree indigenous to Pennsylvania.

Sports facilities

Cal U students are on the move, enjoying informal recreation, fitness activities and competitive sports … just for fun! In addition to our intercollegiate athletics program, California University of Pennsylvania offers a wide variety of sports, recreation and fitness activities.

As a Cal U student, you are a member of the Herron Recreation and Fitness Center, right here on campus. Keep in shape with the new treadmills, elliptical machines, rowers, stationary bikes and other equipment in our workout center. There's also an indoor jogging track, a swimming pool, basketball and handball courts, and the Vulcans Peak climbing wall. Locker rooms have lockers, individual shower stalls and electric saunas.

Student clubs

College is so much more than what you learn in the classroom. Cal U encourages active participation in character-building, experience-enhancing clubs and activities.
