University of San Francisco

About

History

The University of San Francisco, the city's first university, was established by the Jesuits in October 1855. USF’s founding president, Anthony Maraschi, S.J., arrived in San Francisco as an Italian immigrant in 1854.

Education

The core mission of the university is to promote learning in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional students the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as persons and professionals, and the values and sensitivity necessary to be men and women for others.

Career

Whether you're a freshman figuring out your career path or a senior looking for your first full-time opportunity, the career services team will help you every step of the way.

Services

Student services

Choosing to study in the United States is a big decision and there is much excitement and growth on your path ahead. International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) promotes a global perspective for the USF community through educational and programmatic outreach while fostering the holistic development of international students/scholars by providing support services and immigration advising.

Housing services

Living on campus amid distinct personalities and unique backgrounds is a hallmark of the university experience. It’s where new adventures are shared, lifelong relationships are formed, and big ideas are born.

Library services

Gleeson Library | Geschke Center primarily provides support to academic programs by making available the broadest possible array of learning and information resources for instruction and research support.

ICT services

39 Mac and 25 Windows laptop computers are available for check-out at the Access Services desk.

Medical services

Health Promotion Services (HPS) provides student health services that promote an optimal state of health, stimulate better health awareness, and foster a vibrant and safe campus community for student success.

Student Life

Campus life

USF's San Jose Campus offers programs in nursing, education, and counseling. Most programs are two years with class meetings one night each week and some programs offer Saturday classes. The campus offers a rigorous education enriched by exposure to high-tech companies and resources. We prepare students to change the world—here in Silicon Valley.

Sports facilities

At USF, sports play a prime role in our community and in cura personalis, or the care of the whole person. The only Division I university in San Francisco, we have a long history of success, with 10 national championships, 101 conference championships, and 102 scholar-athletes named All-Americans — including basketball legend Bill Russell, distance runner Charlotte Taylor, and NFL Hall of Famer Ollie Matson of the undefeated and uninvited 1951 Dons football team.

Student clubs

Student clubs are a great way to empower and enrich yourself while meeting fellow Dons who share the same passion. Once you’re on campus, you’ll have more than 100 student clubs and organizations to join, including:

  • Animal rights
  • Comics and video games
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Environmental justice
  • Fraternities and sororities
  • Graphic arts
  • Hip hop dance
