History
The university began in November 1994 as an Institute of Technology with 120 students and 13 faculty members in the village of Ettimadai in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu.

Undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes are offered in Engineering, Business, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Journalism, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Arts and Sciences, Health Sciences, Teacher Education, Microbiology, Hospital Management, Visual Media Studies, Mass Communication, Social Work, Nanosciences and Ayurveda.

Housing services
Residential students are housed in single-gender hostels where they benefit from the availability of extra-curricular enrichment activities such as yoga and meditation as well as sports and study facilities. Delicious vegetarian meals are served three times a day in student dining halls. Students also have the option of eating in the canteen and/or juice stall on payment.Each campus has a prayer hall and one or more stores, well-stocked with school and household items. Amenities vary by campus and typically include a branch or ATM of Dhanalakshmi Bank, a tailor's shop, an internet café, STD/ISD phone facilities and a copy center.
Library services
Central Library is the hub of the Amrita Vishwa. It is a Learning Resource Centre and supports the teaching and learning activities of all the Students, Research Scholars, Faculty Members and all other staff members in this campus. The Central Library has carpet area of 1500 square meters. The Library follows open access system offering a total collection of 47693 books.
ICT services
An Information Technology and Communications Services (ICTS) team provides and maintains computing, communication and networking infrastructure at each campus. ICTS supports computer labs with over 500 computers both at Amritapuri and Bengaluru, and over 1600 computers at Coimbatore. Students are allocated time in various computer labs for their course studies.
Medical services
Medical care and facilities are available on each campus and students can receive annual medical check-ups.

Sports facilities
All three campuses have gymnasiums and basketball, football, volleyball, tennis and badminton courts. In addition, there are sports rooms for playing billiards and table tennis. Amritapuri students use the ashram swimming pool. Coimbatore has an Olympic-sized pool.
Student clubs
Students are encouraged to become members of professional bodies such as the Association of Computer Machinery (ACM), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Society for Automotive Engineers (SAE), Computer Society of India (CSI), and Institution of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers (IETE).
Amrita is a multi-disciplinary, research-intensive university and is accredited with the highest possible A++ NAAC grade and is the country's 5th best-ranked university in the NIRF rankings 2021.
