History

Theology has been taught at the University of Edinburgh since its foundation in 1583. New College was established in 1843, and became part of the University of Edinburgh - merging with the Faculty of Divinity - in 1935.

Education

The University is committed to maintaining and enhancing its high quality of learning and teaching. This commitment is directly supported by activities and processes carried out in schools to assure and enhance academic quality and maintain standards.

School of Divinity staff involved in the assurance and enhancement of teaching include a Quality Assurance and Enhancement (QAE) Director, a QAEAdministrator, Course Managers, Subject Area Convenors, and Directors of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies.

Research

The School of Divinity is delighted to report that it ranked 1st in Scotland and 4th in the UK* for Theology and Religious Studies in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) based on the quality and volume of our research.

And in the most recent assessment of teaching quality the School was rated highly satisfactory.

Incoming postgraduate research students are offered a training course in research methods, and are given conscientious supervision from their first weeks through to submission of the thesis. There are also special orientation events for foreign students.

Student services

Undergraduate and postgraduate taught students are assigned to staff members who act as Personal Tutors, helping students to plan their studies successfully.

Library services

Founded in 1843 as the Library of the Free Church College, and now serving the School of Divinity, the New College Library is one of the largest theology libraries in the UK.
