School of Mathematics

The School of Mathematics is situated in the James Clerk Maxwell Building within the King's Buildings campus, 4 km south of Edinburgh city centre. There are over 50 academic and related staff and around 60 research students. The School also runs a number of MSc programmes. Undergraduate courses are given to around 2000 students in any one year.

History

Mathematics has been studied at the University of Edinburgh from its very foundation in 1583. In the early years, all students followed the same MA curriculum, modelled on that of other European universities such as Paris and Bologna. It included Greek, Logic, Philosophy, Natural Philosophy (as Physics was then known) and Mathematics.

Education

  • We offer a range of degrees with a flexible structure and wide choice of courses, so you can tailor your studies to your interests and career plans.
  • Through our MSc programmes you will develop a wide range of applicable mathematical, statistical, computing and personal skills, leading to exciting careers or further study.
  • Our Graduate School is supervised by internationally-leading researchers spanning a wide spectrum of topics, making our School a world renowned centre of excellence in mathematics.

Research

The research environment is enhanced by the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences and by close collaboration with Heriot-Watt University through the Maxwell Institute which was set up in 2005 following significant funding from the Scottish Funding Council. Researchers in areas of applied mathematics benefit from the proximity of strong research groups elsewhere in the University and from collaborative opportunities with local companies and other users of research.
