History

  • Established in 1948, the University of Ibadan, UI as it is fondly referred to, is the first University in Nigeria. Until 1962 when it became a full-fledged independent University, it was a College of the University of London in a special relationship scheme.

Education

  • The University, which took off with academic programmes in Arts, Science and Medicine, is now a comprehensive citadel of learning with academic programmes in sixteen Faculties namely, Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Agriculture, the Social Sciences, Education, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Technology, Law, Public Health, Dentistry, Economics, Renewable Natural Resources and Environmental Design and Management.
  • The Postgraduate School enrolment takes about 50% of the entire student enrolment. University of Ibadan produces an average of 3,000 Masters & 250 Ph.Ds every year. 

Research

  • The establishment of the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships) was premised on the increasing need for the University of Ibadan to enhance its international profile and visibility, establish strategic partnerships with world-class institutions across the diverse sectors of society and innovatively seek new ways of enhancing its revenue generation capacity.

Career

  • The Unit is committed to serving students in their career quests and other needs that may require professional counselling support. The counselling aspect of the services provides, systematic and creative psycho-social therapies that emphasize non-clinical practice while clinical related cases are referred to appropriate quarters; all in a bid to ensure qualitative service delivery in provision of overall wellness of students and staff.

Student services

  • To enhance the integration of international and intercultural perspectives into the principal functions of the University of Ibadan, especially in the areas of teaching, research and community service, the Office of International Programmes (OIP) was established in May 2009 with the support of John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The OIP's vision is to enlarge the University of Ibadan's frontiers of international relationships.
  • As a constituent unit in the Registry of the University, the Student Affairs Division deals with all matters relating to student welfare, hence, the Student Information Handbook is a guiding document to all students.

Library services

  • The Kenneth Dike Library contains over 3,000,000 volumes and seats 1,550 readers. It is open to all senior staff, and students, and to senior staff of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, as well as Alumni of the University.

ICT services

  • The library building besides existing facilities, now has an electronic classroom and a computer laboratory with full internet access, multimedia facilities for the promotion of a conducive learning and teaching environment. 

Sports facilities

  • The University has excellent provision for sporting and recreational activities. The New Complex near Obafemi Awolowo Hall include a football pitch , Fitness Centre and a rubberized (ten lane) track, the only 10 lane track In West Africa and one of the few in Africa.
  • The facilities probably embedded at the Faculty of the Social Science, Faculty of Education and Kenneth Dike Library includes a 50 metre Olympic size Swimming Pool, Two football pitches, four hard Tennis Courts, hockey pitch, two Volleyball court, Cricket pitch with pavilion, two Squash court and a Mini Multi purpose indoor hall for Badminton, Table Tennis, Taekwondo and Judo.
